does repaint lower resale value?
Just wondering.... My 96 has road rash on the hood, bumper and headlight cowling. Not too bad, but I'm giving long term thought to a repaint in the OEM color. Thoughts?
Like anything else, not if it is done well. If it a very low mileage, museum piece then you might want to consider keeping it totally original. For the rest of us the real world it is realistic to expect a bit of repainting as our cars age and cover the miles.

IMO Yes, sorry but since I am in the market for a 993 right now when I see a "repainted because of rock chips" I think it was probably wrecked and move on to the next car. Sorry but in that sense it does effect resale.

Maybe even suggest the painter to sign a contract that states the cars exteriour is intact..
Jon and Miraculix have great points...A body shop that is about to be paid $4,000 for a good repaint should have no problem stating on the invoice that the repaint was for cosmetic purposes only.
I may do the same in the next year or so, and will make sure that I have proper documentation to prove to a future buyer that the repaint was done to maintain or enhance the value of the car. Let's face it, these cars are getting older and I'm sure many of us are contemplating re-paints.

The value may depend on the potential buyer as a repaint may not last quite as long as the factory job. I had a very clean but repainted 911SC Cab that I sold years ago, and the repaint only bothered potential "collectors". It did fetch top dollar at the time though as it was a particularly clean car.
What does an entire repaint usually cost? Are there levels of quality i.e. several clear coats, type and quality of the actual paint etc? I wouldn't want to have my car repainted unless it was at least as good as the factory paint.
Randy-
I've heard various estimates, but a top-shelf job where trim is removed, etc...is probably between $3,500 and $4,000. My 95 Guards Red is not clear coated, I'm not sure about your 1998.

It would be nice to have it done. I have rock chips on the front and sandblasted fender wells. The problem with repainting is that everything that you don't give some attention to would stand out as looking a bit old, wheels, windshield and seals, brake calipers, light lenses, exhaust tips, rear grill....
I debated the same issue on my 50K mile 95. Bottom line is I got tired of working to detail the car and still not getting the look I wanted due to the chips all over the front bumper, lower rocker panels and wheel well arches.
I took the plunge and I love it! Spent $1,400 for bumper, rocker panels, wheel arches and replaced the two clear stone guards. Now when it gets cleaned it looks great!
The invoice clearly states that it was paint material and labor only.

I had the nose repainted and the rear fenders repainted so that they would match the new front splitters and the new rear spoiler. They blended the paint through the hood and fenders in the rear and it looked incredible. I had them write a letter and kept a copy of the invoice stating what had been done. I also took several pictures and made sure they were dated along with video to assure a potential buyer there was no damage. If you suspect someone of passing off a previously wrecked vehicle a good body shop can tell the difference.
I wouldn't worry about it just keep good documentation, I was very happy with the car when it was finished it looked brand new. The buyer of the car was also glad I had the paintwork done. JMO
