Immobilizer warning light
Anyone know what it means if the immobilizer light in the clock module comes on? Mine came on briefly several times this month. Each time, it went out within 10 seconds. The Key Fob works normally and there are no other symptoms/malfunctions that I can see. Just wondering if it's a warning of something about to go or just a nuisance trip.
thx, Jay

According to the manual, there are three options:
- Warning light is illuminated for approx. 2 sec. after the ignition has been switched on to check the light for proper functioning. Then it will go off. The immobilizer is deactivated.
- Warning light on. The immobilizer is activated and must be deactivated using the remote control.
- Warning light flashes after the ignition has been switched on. Immobilizer failure. The failure must be rectified by an Offical Porsche Center.
It doesn't sound like what you are seeing directly applies to any of these.

Thanks for the "Speedy" response!
You're right, doesn't look like any of those.
I don't think it can tell if the Fob battery was low but would be nice if that's all it was.

I replace both my Fob's batteries every Spring and keep spare batteries in the glove box!

I wonder if it is seeing some intermittent "implausible" signals from door switches etc.
How's the car's battery? New and well charged?
Can you read the immobilizer for codes? Durametric or Tore ODB?

So, when this happens, what is the usual outcome? It's happen to me a few times over the past year or so, but yesterday it happen twice. Everything seems to work fine - no problems arming or disarming, & no problems starting.

I think this might be an issue of terminology...
Is your immobilizer light flashing? If not, I think it could simply be a matter of hand-shaking, within the systems in the car, as you turn your key to the, ON position.
Based upon your comments, I wouldn't worry about it.
My immobilizer light comes on and then off during hand shaking, when the system is energized by turning the key to the ON position.

I'd like to put my PIWIS 650 on your car to see what it reads...

Come on over. I'd like to see what the PIWIS says, also. If you start driving now, you can join us for Thanksgiving!!

Using a diagnostic system would not be of much help. As Lorenfb states above, the 993 immobilizer have no OBD diagnostic possibilities. The lock/alarm control unit takes care of all door switches and lock motors, and receives an unlock signal from the immobilizer when a valid key fob is used. The immobilizer also sends a validation signal to the engine control unit, allowing for starting the engine.
Sometimes the immobilizer fails due to water damage, the unit it is placed under the driver's seat, next to the Motronic engine control unit. I have also seen solder faults due to vibration of large components (relays) inside the unit.
Cheers,
Tore
