Default self-dimming rearview mirror

I did a search but didn't find anything on this.

Has anyone installed a self-dimming rearview mirror?

If so, do they work well? Do they look stock? Where to purchase, and how much? Is the install difficult?

Thank you.

(this would be for a '96 993tt)

I wouldn't spend the money on it for my car, but I did have one in my Renault rental last week in Germany. It's worked pretty well. Wipers and headlights were automatic too and came on whenever needed.

I have one in my mercedes and it is great as I don't need to fine tune adjust it like I do the Porsche (not sure I need to do it in the Porsche, but I just do it anyway).

The Mercedes also has the rain sensing windshield wipers which are great! Wish I could get those to given the pain of fine tuning the intermittents. I had forgotten this from my '84 Carrera!

But I don't want to ruin the stock look either which is the primary consideration.

I had it on my VW GTI VR6. Great option. I would like it too on my 933.

I have one on my Tahoe and turned it off. I think it is too dark for my tastes.

I like to keep track of what cars are behind me. You never know when a police car is trying to sneak up behind you.

Default Porsche option

Porsche has a self dimming interior mirror as an option so it will look stock. Install is very easy. The auto wiper actuation/timer is another factory option (standard on the Turbo S) that is also a very simple install but pricey.

Carnewal (Gert) should have them

One came on my car as a factory-installed option. Frankly, I wouldn't spend the money to buy one, but since it is there, that's fine. It requires switched 12 volts, so you would have to remove the headliner to run a power wire, I would guess. Run your Valentine One power while you are at it.

Actually, you do not need to open the headliner. Just remove the rubber strip/moulding around the headliner and hide the wire behind the strip before installing it back. You also need to connect another wire to the rear back-up light (to deactivate the darkening when the car is in reverse). I paid $160 from the mail order dealer awhile ago.

Default Question for PramTT

Rain sensor install - From your post it sounds like you've done this. If it's not too long ago and you remember would you mind giving me the step by step? Where did you pick up the permanent live, the switched live and most importantly the reverse for deactivation when reverse is selected. I am just about to do the install.

Kind regards .. . .

Default Question For PramTT

Sorry, first post should read - Self dimming rear view miirror installation. I am also looking for info on the rain sensor install and I crossed the topics.

Both items to be installed on a 96 993 Targa.

My wife's BMW has these options and the dimming rearview mirror is great. Given how low our cars are I would love to fit this to mine. Sounds like another slip down the slope!

Cheers,

David
