I'm NOT gonna sell my 993...
All those discussions about the direction of Porsche and older cars have made me realize that I really, really want a 356 in my garage again.
Damn me if I don't want them all, but I obviously cannot afford them all... I've been agonizing over this for over a month now... I never owned a car for such a short amount of time (7 months), been so happy with it, spent so much on it, and sold it anyway... and it was a my dream car to boot..
But having reached the pinnacle of porsche ownership in my book, I am realizing I had more satisfaction with something much older, that takes more work to operate and maintain (call it a hobby, not transportation) - I've been bummed since I sold my 65 356C, so I'm gonna look for a replacement, maybe a 58/59 coupé (if you know of one for sale let me know) - and sell my pristine 993 before I put too many miles on it or it lands me in jail for speeding 50 mph over the limit...
I'll post it in the classifieds soon, or after Xmas, not sure if now's a good time... If you know someone who's looking, have them contact me... it's a blue 96 with a brand new clutch, new S03 tires, new discs and pads + odds and ends (at a documented cost of $5000 by the dealer), countless fixes (harness, belts, ballast resistors, relays, new spoiler wall and motor, RSR mufflers, Rs shifter, new distributor caps, new filters etc...) I basically went over the car with a fine tooth comb when I got it and had the dealer do what I could not... Needs NOTHING.
51K miles.... I am thinking somewhere in the mid to hi 30s...considering it's got thousands of dollars worth of brand new wearables and was fixed for the carbon buildup (PO paid $5000 for new valve guides and enlarged ports)... Real nice car...
The only reason I am doing this is I figure I can still find a nice 993 in 3 years, I am not sure I can find a nice old 356 I can afford in that time frame ! go ahead, throw the first stone! ;-)
Greg - the traitor...
PS: plus I can't have the same car as that John D guy ;-)
PPS: damn, it's still not easier after writing this !

Greg, I am interested and close enough to drop by and see it on a weekend. When you are ready to sell give me a call to see if we can come to an agreement.

Greg.....
What are you thinking??!!! I'll send you some cool videos if you'd like, to remind you of what a 993 is all about.. Are You Listening? (Sorry - bad inside joke )
A 356 is outstanding. I wish there were a way you could have both in your garage...
As a thought and if it helps, I can send you my 356 Speedster?? It's only about 10" long, but when it grows up - it want's to be a full sized version. I've been using "Miracle Gro" on it for years - but so far, no luck.... You are more then free to try your hand at it though???
Seriously - since I'm so new to 993 ownership, I can't imagine parting with mine. That may change someday - but for now, I can't imagine the decision you had to go through... Should your 993 sell - I hope it goes to a great home/owner - and you get the 356 of your dreams...

The only place you need or should look at:
http://www.356registry.org/Ads/newads.html
Good luck! interstingly enough, I have been looking for the right 356 as well. Only not for replacement of my 993. The '59 is the best of all worlds when it comes to a 356's. Buy a restored car in near mint shape. And don't look back.

You've got a great car just the way you want it.
Keep the 993 and start saving, and looking, for the perfect 356.
Sure you can't afford both? Any Bozo can have a 993 or a 356, but it takes a truly special Bozo to have both.

Yeah.. thanks guys for not helping.... ;-)
It's a hard decision and keep going back and forth... I don't think I have the patience to save for one, but it would be ideal... Then again 356s might go up while 993s will go down in price, so maybe it's not such a crazy idea... This is torture, you'd think a guy would be happy with a 993 right ? I swear I need Porsche therapy ;-)

Ok... My wife slapped some sense into me. I'll have to work on that patience thing and get both eventually...
After all she's the one who said I should trade in the boxster for a 993 because it was a better car for babies ;-) She's got some sense ! I'm keeping her then (the car) - well the wife too...
Damn ! I could taste that 59 coupé ! Then again, instant gratification is never free !

I have complete understanding of where you are right now and I think most of the others here do too.
My other passion is sailing, so 5 years ago I sold my beloved 1990 coupe because I really wanted this new 45' sailboat.
I had thought that I would never do that having owned 3 consecutive Porsches over a 10 year period.
I was convinced that I would never be without one but I have spent the last 5 years Porsche-less - pursuing other interests.
When I sold the car the new owner said "You are just between Porsches now".
He was right. I was between Porsches for 5 years up until this month. Now with the new-to-me car I am again sure that I will never again be without one.
It's always tough selling, especially a 993, but then there are other things in life - like 356s. I have never owned a 356 but I sure have seen a lot that I would like to own - beautiful cars with class written all over them.
Life goes on - change makes it more exciting.
Whatever you do, ENJOY IT!!
