Default Tires for C4S BBS E88

I have a 97 C4S in speed yellow coming to me, very excited as it's my first air-cooled since a 914. Not able to leave well enough alone I have a set of E88 on it's way. In checking out tires I'd like to try someone more up to date than the old Michelin PS2.

Some "correct" fitments below, but I'm open to going +1 or 2 if they fit. This will be a fair-weather street car, with some PCA instructing.

Any comparative feedback on Bridgestone SO-4, BS RE-71R, Michelin PS2, and Conti Extremecontact Sport and other tires very welcome.

Thanks, looking forward being part of the 993 board.

I've been very happy with my Contis on my C4S. Great combo of performance and value with very little tire noise

For regular street driving I would throw in Hankook Evo2:

From what I've read the track guys are loving the BS RE-71R, but for a combo tire I don't think you can go wrong with any of the above-mentioned shoes.

I have the ExtremeContact Sport on my C4S and really like them. The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 is an old design and their expensive, even back in 2010 it was rated lower to the Conti ExtremeContact DW which has been replaced by the ExtremeContact Sport.

Lots of people like the Potenza RE-71R, but there going to wear a lot faster than the above.

OP provided every piece of spurious information (including a 914 being aircooled?) except of... what is he using the tire for and what's important to him. From that point, every piece of advice is appropriately... well... appropriate.

All this bashing of PS2s and I have yet to lose traction with it on a 2WD turbo. Tire technology may have improved but your car has not gotten faster. Get whatever you want.

Happy to provide more info. Cold grip is important so R tires are out. Getting caught in the rain can happen, but this isn't a daily driver so it's down the list. Low noise is preferred, but not critical. Durability and mileage isn't important either. Hill country hard driving mainly.

I have a race car and others to track, but this will be used to instruct at COTA, so I want lateral and braking grip to offset the low HP. Regarding PS2 not breaking loose under acceleration means little to me, grip, turn-in crispness, braking stability, progressive break-away and anti-tramlining are...and value, not price.

I haven't bought sport street tires other than Cup 2 in years, I drive a truck to work.

There are exactly 2 non-R tires today that will fit the bill. One is Bridgestone RE-71R. The other is BFGoodrich Rivals S 1.5. Have a look at what's available in the sizes you need and chose based on that. BTW, both are available and will be cheapest at Costco.

You see why I gripe about exact use and preferences before recommendations. Bob recommended Conti ExtremeContact in earnest, but they are just not right in this application, IMHO.

I have RE71r and they are very impressive. If you want maximum stick for street driving (and track use) these are the ones to get.

Counterindications - If you need to drive in less than 40 degrees or if you want a tire that will go max miles before replacement.

They stick like taffy, have great turn-in response, are pretty light, and are not loud or uncomfortable. They like lower pressures, so be sure to set them up right if you get them.

I wouldn't go with 225/285 though - too much understeer. See if you can get 235/275 to fit.

I have RE-71Rs on a street convertible. Don't understand the noise complaints.

I have about 3k street miles on mine. So far wear has been reasonable and noise as well. The only time I notice it is on a very smooth surface, in which case you can hear all the smooth tread surfaces against the smooth road. Not loud or annoying, but different than a tire with more tread grooves.

The grip on the other hand is simply astounding for a street tire. For me, all the other slight tradeoffs are more than worth it to get such incredible performance.

Thanks all. Went to order RE-71R but maybe stuck with PS2 given 11" rears. AD08R's in 295/30 unavailable or out of production it seems too. Will search 285 RE-71R stretched on 11's.

11" rears are wide for 993WB but should be OK. 285 will be stretched. 295s are fine. I rebuilt my E88s down to 11" from 12"s but probably could have gotten away with 11.5s. Had too much push on 315 rears I was running before.

Plenty of threads on this in the turbo subforum.
