Talking Visual differences for the 993’s?

I have a couple of books but they don’t do a very good job of visual changes that were made. I would like to look at a 993 and say “Oh! That’s a 1997” or “That’s a 1998 because it has (Insert Part)”. I am getting better at the older cars but the 993’s are hard. I know the ’95 had the “Basket Handle Light” until mid year ’95.

My 96 Targa also has the basket handel, I'm not sure when that was eliminated. I'd like to know that also.

If all ‘98’s are wide bodies are there any differences to the ’96 and ‘97’s?

There are, but I believe they are only on the dash board, IIRC.

Hi John,

Not much, really, to tell 95-98 apart.

Obviously, the TT has its tail, and that started in '96. As stated already, all 98s are widebodies. Any other widebodies you see sans TT tail will be a C2S or C4S, and these are visually distinguisable only by the the latter's BigRed calipers. They share the nose/rocker panels of the TT, so no help there, but I think widebodies started with the '97.

Narrowbodies have a different nose and rockerpanels. 1995s built early on will have the "baskethandle" third-brake light, while later 1995 and all '96 narrowbodies will be "handle-less."

Tagas are, well, Targas, and look like Targas. From the profile, the dead giveaway will be the back quarterwindows: they'll end in a point, not rounded off like all the coupes.

Forget about which rims belong on which car....too many folks change theirs.
Hope this kind of helps.

Edward

1995:
Basket handle TBL on Coupes until approx. April 1995 build (all 993 Cabs and Targas have this, regardless of year).
Oval exhaust tips.
No Turbo, Targa, or wide-body cars.

1996:
Wide-body Turbo and C4S introduced.
Targa introduced.
C4 Coupe and C4S available.
Exhaust tips are more rectangular than oval.
18" wheels introduced.

1997:
C4 Coupe discontinued.
Carrera S introduced, with body-color split engine-lid grille.

1998:
No standard-body Coupes -- only Carrera S and C4S.
Turbo discontinued.

This is what comes to mind (for US market cars).
