Default crosswind effects at speed

I've only had my '95 993 for a couple of weeks so I'm not entirely used to it yet. I recently drove on I-95 at 65-85 mph in 25-35mph crosswinds, and noticed a lot of drifting and the need to constantly correct the steering. Is this normal or could this indicate a steering or alignment problem. The car does have the 18" wheels I've read so many posts on (1995 M Y ), could this be indicative of the problem everyone is mentioning with the 18" wheels??
On a calm day, I did not notice the efects I've described.

fjp,

Welcome to the board! It sounds like your alignment might be off, especially your rear kinematic toe. Find a good shop who is well-versed in aligning the 993 suspension.

I was under the impression that 18" wheels would cause steering rack issues with the car cornering under heavy load and not as in the conditions you describe.

fjp,

I have never noticed significant buffeting of the 993 by crosswinds, although I've certainly experienced this in previous cars - especially a 2000 MB S500. I agree with Mark that you might want to get your alignment checked (after checking that all wheel nuts are torqued correctly, ie. 96 ft-lb).

Good luck, and congratulations on your new car.

fjp:

As suggested by the other good people here, I'd have your aligment checked by someone well versed and experienced with 993's. These cars are VERY sensitive to alignment and can be just diabolical if its not perfect. The 993's and later cars do not suffer fools in the alignment dept,......

The ride height should be adjusted so that the car has a 1 deg nose-down rake. This helps prevent front-end lift with the lowest drag.

Lastly,.....911's do wander a bit more in gusty conditions than other cars due to differences in center of aerodynamic pressure and center of gravity (longitudinally). Its somewhat inherent in the breed.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, I'll have the alignment checked to see if this is the cause. Any idea what the type of alignment ( kinematic toe) to should cost?

Start really simple. What tire pressures are you running? These cars are very twitchy at factory pressures. If that is what you are running, do a search and see what the more expericenced folks suggest.

Regardless, get the alignment done. You have no idea of the condition of the alighnment and you can destroy an expensive set of tires very quickly if that is very far off.

I second Mark's suggestion - I would first check to see if your tire pressures are 34-36psi front and 36-38psi rear (that's my personal preference with the tires I am currently using) and not the "factory recommended" 40-45+ psi.
