Something to note!

Porsche does not allow its dealers to plug or patch tires, it may impair their (high) performance. WE might have the same policy. Given the potential for future disaster, a new tire is always the cheapest option.

I learnt this after I got a flat with 600 miles on a new car. The dealer charged $560 for the new tire, which Porsche subsequently (kindly) reimbursed.

I'm with Todd, you were well treated by WE.

Listen to you, Kim. When's the last time you went out for a ride with me? :-)

Come on up to Infineon (formerly Sears Point) on Dec. 8-9, or if that's too far, Laguna Seca in March and/or Buttonwillow in April. If you've never driven on a track, or gone for a ride with a really experienced and skilled track driver, it will be a revelation!
I maybe interested in going to Willow Springs on May 22-23, 2004. That track is near me and have been there a few times. Once as a race official which i enjoyed very much. Ive driven on the track during lunch parade. But we were told to not go faster than 50mph so i wouldnt call that much of driving on the track. The other tracks that's on the tracquest website seem a bit far. And plus dont i need special tires to race with? Im not familiar with what exactly i need. Someone said i need a helmet and another person said they will let you use a helmet? Little details like that which im confused. Also what preperation do i need to do on the car prior going on the track? Tire pressure check is 1st on my list

Hi Shant:

You don't need any special equipment to participate. I even have loaner helmets available (for free) if you don't want to go out and purchase one until you're addicted to the sport (after about the first 2 laps!). You especially DO NOT need "race tires." Too many novices go out and get R compound tires before they've learned to handle their cars at the limit. This makes it harder to learn because they don't give nearly as much of an audible warning as they get near the limit, they break away more suddenly and you're going faster when they do break away.

As far as the tracks go, Buttonwillow isn't far at all - only about 110 miles from Granada Hills - about 40 miles further than Willow Springs. Buttonwillow is also one of the best tracks in the country on which to learn because it's got a little bit of everything and lots of runoff room just about everywhere in case your testosterone level momentarily exceeds your intelligence level. :-)

Todd,

I've run a few events with some of the other groups, but never with your group. I'd like to get my 16 year-old son some track experience; perhaps we could share the Cobra (I'm not ready to unleash him in the turbo). Would your group accomodate driver/passenger on the track? Can your group allow a 16-year-old on the track? We'd run in your slowest run-group, and swap seats during a session.

Shant,

When I look at the tyre, with all the experiece I have, the I would say that you drove to far on a low pressure tyre, then the rim damaged together with the weight of the car, the tyre. We have in the dealership 2 such tyres right now from two different costumers, same problem. The one is a Bridgestone, the other is a Firestone. I'don't think Michelin or the shop did this. Sorry, may be not the answer you want to hear, but it's a fact that this is a low pressure problem.

Wish you good luck!

Hi Steve:

I'd love to have both you and your son join us! I presume your son has a driver's license. You can share a car in the same run group with just an extra driver fee or submit two separate entries, each of you using the car in a different run group. Email me regarding the passenger situation. There are rules imposed by my new insurance carrier, but we should be able to work within them to accomplish what you want. Remember, though - at Willow Springs and Thunderhill the Cobra would have to have a roll bar, roll hoops or pop-up bars due to the track's rules.

Burnt rubber = very high temperatures. Very high temperatures in sidewalls = excessive flex in sidewalls. Excessive side wall flex = low pressure. Your pictures show a sidewall failure pretty much where the tire would be overflexed in a low pressure situation.

Burning rubber smell would most likely be from all the rubber fragments that have attached themselves to the muffler.

110 miles sounds reasonable. Had no idea buttonwillow was that close. Now that you have cleared up what i need and dont need, has anyone averaged out the amount of stone chips one will receive while driving on the track? I've heard horror stories about it and my car is a garage queen. Is it really that bad or has it been exaggerated? I mean how much more different can it be from driving on the 5 freeway? That's one of my reasons why i hesitate to go.

Ofcourse not i think i took it up tp 70mph on the straight away which is still not nearly as fast as what the other guys were doing. I have to admit, it was the best rush i have ever gotten.

I second what Todd writes, Buttonwillow is a sweet little track, lots of run off and plenty of variety on the turns. I have only been there once but would gladly go back.

Since this thread is already OT, I'll chime in with "I love Buttonwillow, too"....you'll like it Shant! Not only is there lots of runoff for "safe" excursions, it's a fairly tight track (depending on how it's configured) which means you're spending more time working on your technique at lower speeds than at Willow. But on that note, "Streets of Willow" is also a fabulous "learning" track for all the same reasons as Buttonwillow, just a shorter track.
And if you're concerned about your car's "garage queen" status, DEs are pretty mild on your car, and you can protect your finish pretty well with tape. Warning: your first track day will grease that slippery slope....You've been warned

hey Todd Serota [TracQuest],

I'm only a 951 guy, but i really want to get on the track, learn my car, learn to REALLY drive. I'm away from home, which is Los Angeles, for school in North Dakota, but I will be home from December 18th to January 12th. Is there anything going on that i can attend during these dates? also, tell me what to bring etc, will you be able to lend me two helmets? thanks a lot. Hey, if you can PM me your answer as well, I dont get through the 993 borads to often, and will likely forget to check back here for a couple days. thanks!!!

Jeez Eyal, you're supposed to do it the other way around - leave NoDak for LA (and never go back)!
