Hi all, did a quick search and didn’t see anything on this…….First time Porsche owner, have a 992.2 with less than 100 miles on the clock.
At very low speeds with the wheel at near full lock, i get a pronounced hopping from the front tires. Normal? I’ve got the 20/21 wheel option.
I’ve got garages that are on the side of the house so after backing out of the garage i have to make a pretty tight 90 degree turn to the left to head down my driveway and have experienced the hop if I have the wheel near full lock. I’m assuming it’s due to the wide front tires. Any thoughts?
thanks in advance,
Brian

Reason: details
Sounds normal. Ackermann effect. There was another thread on this a few days ago.
The Ackermann effect is a steering system phenomenon that occurs when the inside wheel of a vehicle turns more than the outside wheel while turning. This causes the wheels to travel at different speeds and distances, which can make the vehicle lurch or skip while turning.
Thats interesting, have not tried it in reverse yet. Mine is very pronounced in drive but I don’t have to unwind the wheel much off full lock to get it to go away.
Mine does while in drive and reverse at slow speeds after I've just started the car. Seems to have started when the weather got cooler. Based on my research, all symptoms of the Ackermann effect
it is a common thing with newer Porsches/911s that is much less noticeable/absent on older variants. I can't tell if Porsche designed more or less (I suspect less though) ackerman steering angle than the geometric amount but it is common and not a real problem. That said, it is annoying.
A couple of additional aspects: 1) it is tire dependent - some tire brands do it worse than others, 2) it gets worse as tires wear - newer tires are better than old, 3) it is temperature dependent - more pronounced in cold temps than warm. Basically all down to how much tread squirm the tires allow. Low tread flex/squirm = bad hop.

yes, quite normal - especially so with cold tyres. It seems much less pronounced with warm/soft tyres.
My 991.2 does it and my 992 does it. Worse when temperatures are cold. nothing to worry about, but it's weird and worrying when you don't know. Enjoy the car.
