Had a 2024 Cayenne loaner with start/stop button and digital dash... hmm
Had a 2024 Cayenne loaner with the new layout including the start/stop button and digital dashboard.
I assume Porsche has chosen to parts bin share some of this tech between models to minimize cost. It certainly feels more updated in comparison to my 2020 cayenne. no more fake key turn, multiple functional displays, HUD that's customizeable. Gear switch is also moved to the dash right behind the wiper stalk making the center console sleek with essentially just a volume ****.
But I wonder why Porsche would detach the emotions that comes with turning that fake key. or watching the needle on the tach move with the engine sound. Now it's watching lights on a digital dashboard. Pushing the start button like another BMW/Honda/etc.
I have embraced tech mostly without question. But it feels like tech is neutering my excitement to drive. Dont get me started on PDK only for now.
good luck 992.2, i hope it feels better than this...old man rant (i'm 50) over.

Your entitled to rant.

I don't like those stalk mounted transmission controls, Mercedes has been using those for years, very non-intuitive. The 911 will never get that. I'd rather have a touch control gear shifter like the Tesla.

i'm trying to find a video where it cycles through the various screen options on the .2 cluster
i do most of my canyon driving night/early morning, so night vision is always something i want for spotting wild life on the shoulder, but having it replace the centre rev counter makes it useless for that type of driving, and i don't think you can push it over to the side like the .1 cluster - likewise you can't push nav over to side and leave central rev counter either, or maybe you can i just haven't seen it yet
edit: what you'd want is to be able to put the rev counter on the right where that pointless power graph is or radar on the left - but i don't think the cluster has that kind of JLR/Audi configurability

Funny timing of this thread, I currently have a new base Cayenne loaner…
-Engine is fine, not bad / not good - adequate
-Ride is floaty in normal, decent in sport / sport+
-Tire noise is surprisingly high, car has 1700 miles
-AC fan is noisy - this was a strange and unexpected observation
-Tach is fine, you can bring back the digital rev counter in the middle if you want. I do prefer the analogue tach in the 992.1 and my 4RS. I’m not offended by this digital layout in the Taycan, but don’t love it in an internal combustion car
-Steering, brake and throttle inputs are better than peers, as expected with Porsche
-Auto stop/start is rough and re-engages after you turn it off and change drive modes. Bad.

lol nice spin by Porsche but it’s purely cost cutting, and it’s rampant through all the vag brands atm
the question is, is it enough to deter buying a new .2
the push button start thing doesn’t bother me, nor does a full digital cluster provided it’s a good looking and usable layout
re pic I posted above, the channel owner got back to me, you can’t put rev counter on right of central nav, but you can put night vision on left - I think the only decent layout would be the 5 dial or that new down sweep central rev counter

Change is inevitable but I really think Porsche missed the mark with the digital dash and push button start. Why go through all the trouble without adding the HUD seen in the Cayenne/Taycan? Why not create a unique sport push button start for the 911 to distinguish it from the SUVs and EVs?
It's an interior update with 2019 tech meant to last the next 3 years. It's absolutely about cost cutting and they half-assed it!
... there's always the 994.

official response is “familiarity and consistency between different models.”

Had a loaner as well. Would be a nice car for the wife. The center tach and key should have stayed the same. Don't care about in screen nav since it doesn't support carplay.

To me, the Cayenne is "mis-slotted" now by VAG. At least for what I want from an everyday SUV, the X5 and the GLE fit the bill for a lot less money. I even went lower down the ladder - to a Lexus RX. If I want to buy a high dollar SUV, I'll get a Range Rover because their interiors are gorgeous.
