Like others have said, it’s all relative and everyone is different. My oldest car is an 04 Benz with 140K miles, and Porsche’s I still have but may not drive frequently are 996TT at 40k miles, 997.2 at 50k miles. The 992 is the newest Pcar I have and my 23’ Benz SUV as my daily at the moment, those two get the most use. YMMV

I good weather daily drove a Venetian Blue '87 Carrera from 1994-2001. That's the longest I've owned a P car. Bought it for $28.5K in 1994 (sticker was $47K) and sold it back to the original owner in 2001 for $25K. He turned it into a dedicated track car the last I heard many years ago. On #11 P car now. No plans to replace it since manual transmissions may be hard(er) to come by.

I had my '08 Tundra 15 years before replacing it and now have a '24 Tundra that I will keep long term if the engine doesn't grenade itself like so many seem to have done so far. Mine seems perfect at 5K miles.

One wife, many cars...

Furthermore, I would hate to think about how much I would pay in sales tax if I were trading in and out of cars every two years.
I would like to be like this as well.

Having picked up my 2024 992 Carrera T in manual this past April makes me feel like I have something worth holding onto as I prefer it over the changes to the 992.2

My typical hold time for vehicles is 1-2 years, but since this is a second car and what feels like the last of the manual transmissions I’m inclined to be super satisfied and pursue that goal of holding “forever”!

A "long time" can mean different things to a 70 yr old vs. a 40 year old.

I'm 75, and there ain't that many " long" times left. So I try to choose and use my cars wisely.

A long time is double digits, IMO. I’ve only had two cars I’ve had more than 10 years and they’ve both been Porsches. Every other car has been 2 or less.

Longest I've owned a car so far was 15 years. Shortest was 7. I know plenty of people who change cars every year.

A guy we know had owned a 1978 911SC since new and gave it to his grandson about a year ago. Now that is a long term relationship.

To buy the GTS, I sold my 2007 BMW Z4M Coupe after 17 years of ownership (over 90K miles). My current track car is a 2018 BMW M2 that I’ve owned for a little over 6 years now. My previous track car, a 2013 Audi TT RS is on year 9 of ownership (over 90K miles), though I don’t drive it much now. And a 2023 Toyota Supra A91-MT is at 19 months of ownership, my daily, and the GTS is on month 4.

My track record has been I have sold any Porsche I bought within a year... except for my 992 GT3 which just passed its 1 year anniversary.

I plan to keep the GT3 for a very long time.... unless I get the call for a GT3RS allocation

Depends on the situation, longest I’ve owned a car is 4 years but most are 2-3 years. 21 cars since 1994 not including the wifey’s cars. I have to work on her to change her car at 6 years 🤣. But for me it’s a function of desire, Daily car I would say is a quicker turn, sports cars can last a long time if the color/spec is right. Age plays a factor too, I’m closing in on 50 and with the trend to EVs I’m probably hanging onto the right car for longer, once I retire I will have a fun car I might move around but will probably hold a daily for a very long time. The key is knowing oneself and what you really want, don’t say I’m gonna spend $x but it will my forever car if you think you will trade it after 1 year. Buy what you want and do what you want but be realistic, you can manage the cost if you focus on the buy side.

Any car that makes every drive an event will automatically become a “keeper.” My ‘66 Vette has became my “keeper “ soon after acquiring it in 1987. It shares my garage now with ‘21 CGTS that I’m starting to think I may need at least two “keepers.”

On vacation trip from SoCal home to northern Idaho summer of 1988. Had decided by then I’d be keeping this car for a while.

I sold my 2006 MINI Cooper S at fifteen years, with 50,000 miles and several long trips including Coast-to-Coast US (and back).
Sold my 2002 VW Eurovan at twenty years, and 140,000 miles. I just thought that twenty years was long enough to own any one car. And parts were getting the dreaded "NLA". I've since been helping the young man who bought it; he's put another 14,000 miles on it. But old cars with a lot of miles are problematic, and other than Porsche, are rarely worth keeping on the road.
My wife is still driving her Lexus 2004 SC 430 with 118,000 miles, which still runs and drives, and even looks, like new.
All these cars were bought new.
As a senior owner, I don't see us ever selling our 2022 992 S, MT, ever.
