Drove the 1999 BMW e46 323 for 10 years. Drove the 2007 987 Cayman S for 16 years. In parallel, rode my BMW 1100GS bikes for almost 15 years. Lots of miles and great memories with those vehicles.

Still miss the Cayman. Absolutely bomb proof reliable. No IMS issues, no bore scoring, never used a drop of oil. And the sweet sweet sound of the Metzger engine above 4500 rpm….The BMW 323 was another story. Constant electrical and mechanical gremlins that cured me of the BMW car itch.

Looking forward to a long and happy relationship with the 2002 992.

I said the same thing with my 992C4S and traded it in after just 2.5 years and approximately 35k miles later.

I will soon have owned my 3 pedal 991.2 Targa longer than that C4S. I likely will keep the Targa forever until I decide to get something else. lol

It’s all relative, but to me a “long time” with a car is anything more than four years. I’ve only owned three cars for more than four years, a 92 Honda Prelude (9 years) that I was fortunate to get brand new during my senior year in high school, an 08 Lexus RX (5 years, wifey’s car), and a 15 Macan Turbo (6 years).

Unless the next gen 911 blows me away, my 992 GTS will probably be the last 911 I own. Fortunately, the 992.2 doesn’t give me the itch whatsoever and with the prices of these cars increasing as they are, I just don’t think the cost of admission is worthwhile anymore. It was a pretty big jump in price (for me anyway) going from my old C2 to the GTS and while I absolutely love the car, I don’t think anything else will provide the satisfaction commensurate to the cost - Porsche or otherwise. All that said, I have no plans or thoughts about moving on from my GTS.

you beat me by 5 days
the shortest I kept a car is 10 days. S2000, the owner added a turbo to it , I thought it was cool . Drove it on vacation to Atlanta , car could barely move in HOTLANTA, went to Perimeter Porsche , bought a Baxter S and drove it back home
Lost 2 k on it which is not bad
I switch 3-4 cars per year so long time is who knows, I am the wrong person to answer that question

I had a 2020 GT4 MT that I thought I would keep for a while since it's likely the last of its kind, etc. I just traded for a 992 GTS. I'm hoping to keep it for longer but we'll see...

I owned my last 911 for 12 years and 10 months. Very nice car. I consider 10 years to be “long term”. Three years or less is “short term”.

(On a related note, I definitely don’t consider 30k miles on the odometer to be “high mileage”, as some here on RL seem to feel. You have to hit over 90k miles to call a 911 “high mileage”.)

It's the same here. Technically correct, but you eat the trade in difference which is probably 5 figures also.

I wonder if I set the record here. I kept my 1989 BMW 535i for 26 years before replacing it with a 2016 M4.

For me, I’d consider 8-12 years pretty long. That’s about the time ice cars tend to require more and more maintenance. When the maintenance bill starts to rival the remaining asset value, it’s a very long time.

That said, one of my neighbors was restoring a 911 Targa. That his mom was the original owner of. When she was fresh out of college. It’s been a minute.

A "Long Time" had an entirely different value when I was in my 20's than it does now at 70. Anything over 10 years would be on the edge of a "Long Time". Between 5 and 10 years is just "Awhile".

I have more faith a 993 will be road worthy for 20 years than a 992. Not only the mechanical components were simpler, the computers will become outdated and eventually you won't find replacement parts or skilled labor to fix modules. Time will tell.

10 years plus for me. At 64 and heading into retirement it's time to be more fiscally prudent than buy new cars every 3-4 years. Anyway, what in today's market could possibly be better?

Delivered 3.5 years ago and now at 27,000 miles, my C4S was also a pretty good deal compared to today's pricing.

So, I'm curious: when people say "I plan to keep the car for a long time," what do they typically mean? Is "long time" usually four to five years, seven years, or even 10+ years?
It's code for "this is how I am going to justify 50k in options on a base car that is only 120k with no options"

That's what they typically mean.
