Default Break in

Just picked up my new 992.1 with MT…driving about 300 miles home how should i break it in? Heard every 20 minutes should shift gears to keep RPMs different for better engine break in…any thoughts would be appreciated

You’ll get hundreds of different opinions on this and all will say they never had any issue. So drive it sensibly for the first thousand miles and you’ll be fine. Enjoy the car.

Personally I tried to keep it below 4,000 RPM for the first thousand miles. For the first few hundred, I ensured the RPMs varied periodically by shifting into higher and lower gears even if just driving on the highway. Easy to do with a manual.

r
Porsche recommends that the car be broken in during the first 3000 km (1875 miles), with revs not to exceed 4000 rpm and varying engine speeds. I just completed my break in, and after 3000 km increased by 1000 rpm each drive until I hit redline. I also avoided using sport plus during the break in period. May be overkill, but I plan on keeping the car for a long time.

Just take an exit ramp every 30 minutes.

You could follow the instructions in your owners manual.

Or listen to the riff raff here on Rennlist, who are complete strangers and really have no interest in the OP's 911.

Every 911 and Cayman I owned since 2004 I never did any break in. Drove it however I wanted once the oil temp reached normal operating temperature. Never had any issues with the engine. Normal recommended maintenance plus track season maintenance. Drove most to around 60k miles.

This is the best engineering oriented discussion I have seen on engine break-in. Sixteen minutes.

Do not drive at a constant rpm. Continually vary your rpm gently between 1500 and 3500. The vacuum this creates within the engine will help seat the piston rings. Follow the instructions in the owners manual as others have stated.

I would just set your gps to the your destination and select avoid highways, and that route will be perfect break in. It will have a lot of varying speed changes, stop and go, etc. Yout want to avoid sitting on the highway at a near constant speed!

The first couple of hundred miles are the most important. If you are going to have any restraint, do it then. Avoid quick stops and vary the revs if you are on the highway.

For me I kept it under 4K for the first couple hundred miles, then under 5K till about 700, and then I was good to go.

I only do 2000 miles a year on the car, so there is no way I can have an 1875 mile break in period.

Jeezus, drive the thing man! I got my 992T 4/23 and by 5/27 I had 2100 miles on it. To OP:
