Hi - I'm looking at adding a 992 Targa 4S manual to my garage.

Background - wife wants an open top car and leaning towards a Targa 4S as model of choice. I only buy Porsche and currently have a 992 GT3 and Macan T in the stable. I also previously owned a 992 C2S and drove a 992 C2S.

For those of you that have driven a 992 Targa for an extended period of time - how does it compare to other models? I'm worried about the extra weight might take too much away from the enjoyment of the car.

Alternatives would be a 718 Spyder (no new) or Spyder RS (hard to get allocation). A cab could be an option but I much prefer the look of a Targa.

I've had my 22 GTS Targa for 6 weeks now. I'm coming from an RS5, which was a nice car, but not comparable. I believe the Targa adds something around 250 lbs to the car, which is why I went with the GTS and it's extra 30HP. I've wanted a Targa since I was in my 20's and after driving it for a while, I know I made the right decision. Some people must be professional drivers here, as they say they can notice the weight of the Targa. I have a buddy that's 6' 5" & close to 300lbs and couldn't tell the difference when he was in the car or not. I can see it making a difference if you track the car, but I only plan on doing that 1 day/year with my son. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you. I already have the GT3 PDK so there is no way I opt to track a Targa manual! This would be just a fun touring car.

I have had my 2024 Targa 4S for five months, and love driving it. I regularly take it on twisty northern California roads, and it handles and accelerates beautifully. I do highly recommend getting PDCC, as there is no body roll in the Targa with it switched on. Good luck with your search.

I've got a manual targa 4s and have extensive time in lots of different 911 variants. You can search my posts for plenty of rants on this topic. I guess I wouldn't buy it as a dedicated track car but short of that I'm calling BS on anybody who complains about it being top heavy or sacrificing performance. Genuinely can't find any real world day to day driving scenarios where I believe it sacrifices anything meaningful vs other variants. And IF say you were that precise and tuned in to your driving, the looks and overall experience of a targa easily compensate for anything you are giving up performance wise. A GTS coupe with PDK I'm sure would feel quicker in some scenarios but sounds like you want manual and are going for overall driving experience vs milking every last ounce of performance... I'd be SHOCKED if you regretted a targa.

Yeah exactly, this is not a car to extract the ultimate lap times. It is to be a sports car for driver enjoyment.

I'm going for a new allocation for a .2 (I have faith Porsche will make another hit with the .2). I am hoping to get a PTS allocation and go with Meissen blue with heritage interior.

I know rumors are that manuals are not going to be available - we shall see, worst case it will be a PDK and I'm ok with the risk.

I bought 2 992.1 already so waiting for the .2 makes sense at this point.

I have been driving P-cars since 1965. First 911 was a 1970 911T. I have been in a 991.1 Targa 4S for the last two years, first Targa. Shame on me! It is not a GT3, but I still enjoy throwing it around a few laps. It’s everything I could want at this point. Great on long road trips. I do a 10K mile trip every summer. Great DD if so inclined.
Not sure where you garage, but if you get to spec the car, heated & ventilated seats are a must extend the open top season.
I am positive the roommate will love the car :-)

I had my Targa4GTS Manual for a year or so, absolutely love it!
did a review on it too, feel free to check it out!
IMHO, it’s the best of both worlds, it’s classic X Modern, an awesome DD, and it works for an occasional track car as well!
Only thing I regret not getting is the PDCC, as there’s a lot of brake dust.
Front Axle Lift is a must get option for me, just in case or curbs and slopes.
Other than that, I love it to bits!

The 992.2 Targa won’t have a manual option?

Not likely as hybrid may prevent a manual option. This is not confirmed yet.

Sounds like a good plan. And Meisen over heritage would be killer.

I'm willing to bet that the manual sticks around in the .2 for certain variants. GTS may lose it but I'd bet you can still get a Targa4S with manual. Manual targa with heritage interior.... you must have extremely good taste.
