Base Carrera owners. Do you ever regret not getting the S?
#16
I would have gotten the S for the diff, bigger red brakes, and extra power (in that order) if it was an option but it wasn’t so I didn’t. Keep in mind too that the base is the most factory underrated of all of the 911 engines, and is already too powerful for typical road applications. There aren’t too many places where I can use full throttle despite driving fast and spirited (but I also don’t do dumb highway pulls).

Sigh. It looks like @notyetporschedad is another reincarnation of our classic RennList troll.
Heavens to Murgatroyd, offspring?

Besides the positive points others have made, I like the base wheels a lot. I like the design. I like the slightly higher profile tires both for ride, optics, and wheel protection.
I also like having the charcoal colored calipers. Ordering gloss black calipers costs extra on the S and GTS.
Lower unsprung weight from lighter calipers and rotors. In the Porsche world, weight savings can be very costly.
Here, the weight saving actually costs less. Also, the OEM base rotors cheap to replace. From memory, $400 at Suncoast.
I drive hard in canyons downhill, no brake fade.
And if you did have fade, there are fabulous aftermarket options such as Girodisc, AP Racing and others. Most would not need that.
Some have said the smaller turbos allow better engine noise to pass through. Haven't been able to do a side by side comparison to personally confirm.
...and the obvious: lower sticker price, less ADM, and usually better availability.

Bigger brakes, Mechanical Limited Slip Differential and ease of resale were my reasons for the "S". FWIW, whatever turbo lag my 2021 C2S has, it's barely noticeable. Drive an older Chrysler 2.2 L or 2.5 L Turbo and you'll come to appreciate what "real" turbo lag feels like. Particularly on a FWD car with an open differential and unequal half shafts.

I went from a 991.1C2S to a base 992C2. Would I rather have a S? Sure, but not for an additional $17K. I can't tell the difference between the 991 and the 992 for driving on public streets. Am I happy? Absolutely. Now if I had no financial constraints I would have a GTS, but I can't rationalize the cost.

Drove an S before buying a base Carrera. Knew instantly it had more power than I needed. Been happy with the base so far. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.

No. But I wouldn’t say no to an S if a deal fell in my lap that made sense. Someone here put it best (and I’m paraphrasing), “It depends how much *** you want to haul. The base hauls plenty of ***. The S hauls more. GT3 more still.” It seems to me anyone would want the more powerful car all things being equal. But all things are not equal. Just get what you want and what you can afford.

I owned a 2022 992S and sold it because of some orthopedic medical problems. Bought a Macan S, which served its purpose. Medical problems are resolved and I'm going back to a 992 (hooray). I was rather stunned by the price increases and so decided I would test drive a base 992 before deciding what to order. After driving the base, I told my SA that "the base would get me into plenty of trouble". Ordered a well-equipped base rather than a sparsely equipped S and can't wait for it to be delivered in April 2024.

Currently in a C2 Coupe and have C2 Cab. ordered. Plenty of power for me. No regrets.

For road use, I honestly couldn’t really tell the difference between S and c2. Have the c2 now, and perhaps I hit the full throttle 1% of the driving time, and even then it’s scary fast as is. I had a Taycan before which I believe has more on the go oomph than even a C2S, but it’s the C2’s drama with the sport exhaust and NVH that really give you the “go fast” sensation. also, when money somewhat matters at the end of the day, and ~$20k more upfront for the S, and a faster depreciation for the S means that over 4 years the total price differential is more like $30k (TVM). That’s enough money for a couple of nice trips, versus an imperceptible S benefit in day to day for me. But hey, it’s your money.
