Default 992 Carrera S--2WD or 4WD?

I live in Phoenix where it's hotter than the hubs of hell in the summer and merely warm and never freezing in the nonsummer.. It rains here--sometimes VERY heavily--but never snows, and I plan never to drive my car into areas where it could snow in their winters.. I'm now configuring a new 992 and awaiting an allocation.. I'd never track my car.. Currently that configuration includes a Carrera 4S totaling almost $184K on a base of $139K.. If you were putting one together and had no problem paying for whatever you want, would you order the 4S or the S?

FWIW, I got the (2)S to $180K.

Personally I'd got with a higher spec 2S rather than an almost equivalently priced 4S. 2S has less going on mechanically to possibly break in the future and it doesn't sound like you're in an area where the 4S would be of great benefit. Just my 2 cents.

If you can drive both, do and test it.

both good but should be your own preference which you should go with.

all the best

If I were not driving in conditions that required chains on all vehicles other than AWD/4WD, or which required chains on all vehicles except AWD/4WD with snow tires on all wheels, I would have ordered a 2S rather than a 4S.

If you don't plan to use the car where road conditions require AWD, I don't see a need to have it. If you're only very concerned about wet traction, get a set of all seasons for the "rainy season," though my guess is that would also be overkill. Lots of AZ guys here who don't seem very concerned...

You are absolutely correct.. I'm tending toward rear-wheel drive.

I live in Gilbert AZ and have a Carrera S. In stock form, the grip in these rear engined cars is amazing. However, now that my car is tuned, when winter comes around and temps dip below 60 degrees or so (like now), the car is insanely fast due to the colder denser air and has minimal traction and will slide around if I floor it in first gear. On these occasions I do think I should've gotten a 4S. But if you're not going to tune your car and do crazy hard launches in the winter, then a RWD S is totally fine. I will say I appreciate the extended gas tank that can only be spec'd with the RWD models.

I've also driven my S in heavy rainy conditions in AZ and in wet mode, the car is super docile and safe to drive. So you don't really need AWD here but you can definitely get sideways and squirrley in the winter when the roads are cold and you drive like an ape. In the summer time, the RWD S has epic levels of grip in all conditions.

4S = more expensive parts to break, heavier, can’t get extended range fuel tank and costs more. I’m a rear drive kinda guy. YMMV.

I went 4S because it snows where I live and I’m daily driving it. If i were in AZ, i’d go RWD. lighter, sits lower and can get extended range fuel tank. i was surprised how much wheel gap my 4S has. when it arrived, I thought maybe it had spacers installed for transport or something. on flip side, I never scrape the front bumper on anything. lol.

If you really need a 4S you won't have any lingering doubts about the choice. A 2S is also excellent.

The only reason to consider 4wd in AZ is if you were using the car a lot to go Skiing up at Snowbowl that requires 4WD anytime they get a dusting.

If you're staying here in the valley, get 2wd. It's a no brainer.

Also, didn't you just buy a car?

that and you can't get the larger gas tank if you order a 4S.

I have the extended fuel tank and regret it. I only get to fill up about 3x a year, so that’s only 3 pics I can contribute to the gas station thread.

The new one I'm considering...

...will be for next year.. Yes, I know I'm crazy. Pics are from the configurator, mildly edited.

I would get the 2S and get the larger fuel tank…cannot get that with 4S….think you would have more fun with the 2S…and BTW better gas mileage. With larger tank the range is better too.

OK, 2WD it'll be.. I thank each of you for your opinions and insights.. When we do NOT turn into 'smart'asses, this forum is HIGHLY useful. 😀
