Where to connect battery tender
I would like to get a battery tender for my 2020 992 Carrera S cabriolet. I have CTEK 7002 models for my other collector cars and they work great. I have been looking at old blogs and there seem to be mixed messages about where to hook up a tender to the newer 911s. If I hook up to the battery, I have to take off the panel in the fronk to reach the battery. If I hook up to the "cigarette lighter" socket, there is concern that it does not stay "hot" and the tender shuts off after a few minutes.
The local Porsche dealer suggests connecting directly to the battery. He recommended connecting the eyelets to the battery, but can you put the panel back on over the battery section without crushing the tender cables? I would not want to have to take the panel off and on every time I disconnect the tender.
Anyone have experience with battery tenders with 992s?
Thanks.
Thank you.

The panel cover does not seal tight around the opening. Therefore, you can get a permanent connector with quick-disconnect and run it under the cover and it will be fine.

Just plugged my Cayman in. Tender lead sits just outside of cover lid. Lid flexes to accommodate charger wires easily. Charger sits on windshield wiper.
Unplug and drop the charger plug under the hood and go!
When I get back sometimes I can reach it sometimes I need to pop hood.

I actually have a similar question. I have the Ctek Lithium charger for my Lithium battery. Conflicting information on whether to connect the negative directly to the negative battery post or to the ground that the Ctek manual and the Porsche manual suggest. From what I can gather, for Non-Lithium you want to connect the negative to the ground (not to the negative on the battery). But on the Lithium, the negative can be connected to the negative on the battery or to the ground located away from the battery. Can anyone add their perspective/experience here ? Certainly not looking to fry my battery - I understand they are fairly pricey. Thanks in advance. Also, for the original poster - yes, the cover will go back on no problem once you hard wire the eyelets. The cable can sneak out by the windshield trim area no problem. If you a do search here you will find additional excellent info from the group.

Here is a entire thread discussing it, with photos and all: https://rennlist.com/forums/992/1182...charger-5.html
I have the pigtails but I haven't permanently installed it yet... I've been using the clamps up to now. I think it is okay to hook to the negative terminal on the battery but Porsche recommends using the dedicated ground post that is not on the battery. It's kind of far away though and there isn't a connection point for the eyelet.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have ordered my new CTEK tender and the longer eyelets from Amazon. I will post a follow up once I have everything hooked up and hopefully working.

Yes. I’ve had my tender since getting my 992S nearly 2.5 years ago. I have the quick disconnect lead directly connected to the battery, as your dealership recommended, with the quick disconnect lead portion coming out of the opening in the plastic shroud (close to where the windshield wiper is)….so I can easily disconnect when i want to drive the car. Out of sight when not in use. Very simple DIY project. Just as shown in the pics of post #8,

PSA: Make sure any wire(+) you connect directly to the battery has an inline fuse.

My CTEK pigtail set-up on my 2023 GT3.
Negative lead goes to a bolt on the strut tower.
Went with the inline fuse piglet (that happens to be a touch longer) from CTEK.
CTEK 56-629 which can be found on Amazon for about $15 and uses M6 eyelets.
Got a nut from Home Depot for the positive lead on the battery.

Be careful. I tried connecting eyelets directly to the battery post clamps on my 21 C2S. I was able to remove the 10mm nut on the positive battery post clamp, but when trying to remove the nut on the negative clamp, I damaged the clamp ($200 part and labor). The 10mm nut on the negative clamp is flared and held in place, which resulted in stripping the bolt. DON'T TRY IT.

This is incorrect, and overly complicated. Only need to do this when attaching a closed circuit (like a jumper cable attached to another car) to avoid creating sparks near the battery. Rather, just attach the open-circuit CTEK pigtail directly the battery terminals, always observing correctly polarity and using caution on the positive terminal that you don't accidentally touch the wrench to a grounded piece of metal, so best to use an insulated tool if available. Keep it simple.
ps Apologies to those of you ‘triggered’ at the sight of an Li battery, but mine has been fine.

If you were to actually call up CTEK Support (888-880-0684) they will tell you NOT TO CONNECT TO THE NEGATIVE BATTERY POST.
Besides, the owner's manual says to connect the negative cable of the charger to the ground point.
