Default PASM vs. speed bumps

Guys, I live in North Virginia -- an area of urban sprawl that has more than its share of speed bumps, speed humps and potholes.

I'm in the market to buy a used 992 as my first Porsche and am concerned about getting a car lowered suspension (from PASM). I had been looking for Carrera 4 and 4Ss without lowered suspension, but it seems like the majority of the used 922s out there have PASM and the associated lowered 10 mm suspension.

What has been your experience with 911s with speed bumps and humps with:

- standard suspension height
- lowered 10 mm height
- lowered 20 mm height

Please let me know!

advTHANKSance

I guess you mean SPASM. In any case, my PASM with ~ 27mm lowering works fabulous...but then again, I have no idea how high speedbumps are in North Virginia.

Tobeit, to clarify, I'm talking about the following entries from the Porsche Finder site:

PASM Sport Suspension (Lowered 10mm) -- Option Code 1BV or
PASM Sport Suspension (20 mm Lower) -- Option Code 030 (I found this on the listing for a 2017 C4S -- not sure if it also applies for a 922)

I am not up to date on option codes but on 922 the base suspension is called PASM and if you order the Sport PASM its usually called SPASM (at least that what I always see). The SPASM is 10mm lower and there is no 20mm option available on 992...at least I never heard about it. But I am not spending a ton of time on the configurator...so, someone who does can chime in.

The lower "sport PASM (SPASM) is not an option on any C4. Both C2 and C4 have the standard PASM which is not lowered beyond the PASM standard height. A C4S could have the SPASM optioned but many will not so be sure you reading the build correctly. It would have to list the "PASM Sport Suspension (Lowered 10mm)" listed on the option sheet which is about a $1k option, otherwise it as well just would have standard PASM

I have SPASM and I'm lowered by about 20mm. I have to drive through 7 speed bumps to get out of my neighborhood so 14 speed bumps total every drive. I take them at an angle and don't have much issue. I scrape slightly in perhaps one speed bump.

Fredeee, this is a good idea. I'll look for cars that have this.

I'm in the DMV with SPASM. All speed bumps that I've encountered cleared perfectly with room to spare. I opted for FAL mainly for when entering my office garage (steep ramp) but have not needed it when going over speed bumps.

I wouldn't waste my money on FAL in the DMV. I have a 2022 C2S cabriolet with SPASM and live and I've had no problem at all with any speed bumps in MD, VA or DC. I do have to occasionally attack a driveway/parking lot exit ramp at an angle and sometimes even then scrape a little, but I'm ok with that.

Relatedly, I know there is some controversy/view that SPASM makes the ride quite a bit stiffer--I agree to a certain extent, the ride on this car is noticeably stiffer than it was on my first, 2020 base C2. But it's still fine and, man, does it make the car look meaner, lower slung, faster, racier.

Same for me as Woobiee. I live in NoVa too. SPASM on my C2S plus FAL. FAL is IMHO a lifesaver. I use it all the time. Speedbumps in Arlington area are a mixed bag. Most are reasonable but there is one near our home that's a bitch and FAL is essential for it and for the entrance to our cul de sac. I love FAL. You'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands before I would give it up, it's that good. One time I forgot to use it coming out of a parking lot and heard a slight crunch as the lower plastic splitter scraped the driveway (DUH!!!). Other than that, I'd agree with others that the 10MM drop doesn't create too much of a problem with basic speed bumps but I would absolutely argue that it does make a difference on driveways depending on your approach angle and steepness. If you can find a car with FAL then your concerns will be resolved. If not, then you may, from time to time, get some minor scraping with SPASM. Good luck in your search, it's a tough market for buyers still, not much to choose from and prices seem to still be quite high for good used examples.

Fortunately if you do scrape, it's mostly the underside which isn't visible. Plus it's just a few hundo bucks to replace and easy enough to self-install.

I scraped my front lip a few times when I was not able to angle it properly (but I am much lower than SPASM)...but when I scrape on speed bumps its not the plastic front lip but the flaps in front of the front wheels. These are like 1-1.5" of the ground for me and they scrape on speed bumps as they sit on front of the wheel, i.e. before the wheel goes up on it. Bad thing here is when they scrape they actually brake the tabs that attach them to the underbody panel...fixed that a few times by now on my car.

PS: When I scrape my front lip I simply sanded it out smooth again as it typically only roughens up the underside edge.

I have a C4S with SPASM. No issue with any speed bump so far. I do have FAL for some driveways I enter but have not used FAL on a speed bump.
