These cars have undergone 50-years of design revision and development to accommodate and fine tune a rear engine setup with the resultant handling traits we all love.

As a result, adding at least 250 kg of battery structure (we can probably dismiss the motor since this will likely be integrated into the flywheel) will affect the required setup more than almost any other car.

Such additional mass can only be added to the centre section of the floor and the main trait of the 911 will be lost. I hope I have to eat my words.

I would definitely buy a hybrid 911

Im fine with hybrid sports cars as long as they have that ICE engine. Electric motors just add more torque, so why not?

But a full on EV? Good for getting groceries…

You have a GTS don't you? I think the sound of mine is great. It's got a really nice growl, and I certainly would not want it any louder. It's too loud if I activate the PSE. To me, it's just on the cusp of being too loud even in normal mode. One db higher, and I think it would become quite annoying on long drives.

But on the topic of hybrids. I wouldn't care as long as it wasn't heavier. I find extra power pointless.

Would LOVE for Porsche to utilize their extensive knowledge and engineering experience to minimize the environmental devastation and humanitarian crises causes by the current insane race to electric vehicles. Porsche should do the bare minimum implementation required to permit continued existing vehicle production, despite the political obstacles erected by environmental extremist idiots.

The super smart Porsche engineers already know that these EV mandates are already severely harming our planet's environment. These EV mandates already result in child slave labor mining the minerals.

The ~10 year $5K to $60K replacement battery pack cost "fuse" is lit when the cells are made.

The spent battery pack is either shredded and disposed in a US landfill, or shipped overseas for incineration.

History will show this to be a dark time for our environment and for humanity.

Agree Ipse, it is the most sporting EV made, a true Porsche.
Gordon Murray makes exactly your point about EV weight being hard on suspension, brakes, tires, ergo his opinion "not yet."

Well "the typical 911buyer is 46 to 65, average age 52". It's also a step up car from an executive saloon for a lot of people. They don't understand it's a sports car first. Probably why we see so many low mileage 911s for sale.

I'll evaluate the hybrid when it shows up. Probably go Ng to pick up a 60s- early 70s 911 in a couple years though.

The weight continues to climb. At what point do we realize we have strayed very far from the original intent of the 911?

That ship has long ago sailed.

It is 100% possible to instead purchase very fine examples of early 911 vehicles if that original intent is the desired outcome. I just purchased a beautiful 44 year old Jeep for fun and because I didn't want the modern version. Already spent more than a new Jeep on this vehicle to get my desired result.

And what was the original intent of the 911?

When Porsche transitioned from the 356 to the original 911 model its intended purpose was to make "a larger, more powerful, more comfortable sports car that retained the brand’s design DNA." Introducing a hybrid drivetrain does not detract from that, ahem, ethos.

They can still keep the weight manageable if they engineer other savings - but that's going to add even more cost to the car.

The 911 went over 3000lbs with the introduction of the 964 Carrera 4 in 1998. To Porsche's credit, they have done well to keep the car's weight reasonable when considering the demands put forward by safety and emissions regulations and despite a very significant gain in size as well as a demand for ever increasing performance which brings larger (and heavier if using same materials and construction) components. Having said that with the lightest 992 likely around 3250-3275lbs (a near stripper 992 T with the only option being the now-orderable buckets), and the heaviest models (Turbo Cab and Targa 4 GTS?) close to 3700, I feel any further weight increase has the 911 so far from its origins as to question if it actually is still a 911. A battery pack anywhere in the car fundamentally changes the car in my humble opinion.

They need a rear seat delete option in the hybrid - saves weight, and the battery pack is mounted there anyway.

Disingenuous whiners, the lot of you. If you want a lighter, nimbler, ICE-only 911, they made plenty of those 20 years ago. Go buy a 997, install CarPlay, and be happy.

When Porsche builds a hybrid 911 with the top end and sound of a GT3 and the low end of a TTS, you'll all be here to complain about the curb weight mere seconds before writing a check.

Speak for yourself... Some of us really do enjoy the lighter, NA models and aren't that far from just sticking to the old ones if Porsche moves too far from the original formula...
