Default Screw in tire - repairable?

Construction at the house and I thought I did a visual sweep but I missed this screw. Tires have 1600 miles on them. Took it to America’s Tire and they said 20% chance it’s repairable given it’s somewhat close to the sidewall. But they didn’t have a replacement OEM spec tire and if they deemed it unrepairable they can’t put it back on.

And going on vacation for 2 wks so couldn’t chance it being stuck or needing to be towed. So drove it home. 24 hrs later no pressure loss at all.

My current plan is to order one tire, take it to them when back (assuming it’s not flat by the time I’m back), see if it’s repairable and if so hopefully they take back the new tire. Worst case I have a spare at home.

If others with more experience have guidance or suggestions, it would be appreciated.

The center of the screw is about 1/2” from the top of the short groove pointing towards it. And 1 1/2” from the circular line going round the tire right above the ZERO.

With my work van, I get screws in tires about every other month, and I always use a rope plug and repair it myself. I’ve driven for tens of thousands of miles with them repaired this way.

However, whenever I repair one that close to the edge, it’s inevitable that the steel separates and you’ll get a bulge in the sidewall. Spray it with a soapy water solution when you get home and see if there is any leak.

That definitely looks too close to the edge for a tire shop to repair. You can try to patch it yourself w/ a
tire plug kit like this one tire plug kit like this one
.

not really, that corner is reinforced for lateral loads. I would replace the tire

Even though it is technically too close to the sidewall, if it were me then I would repair it myself using my rope plug kit.

I wouldn't patch that. It's on the corner block and I wouldn’t trust it driving the car as it should be driven.

I am generally fine with patches, but that screw is too close to the edge.

I plugged one like that (maybe a little closer to the sidewall) on my Lexus at about 10K miles, and got another 40K out of it.

Nope, as in it shouldn’t be repaired. Can it be plugged? Sure! Can it be done safely? No!

Had one almost identical to this on Friday. Brought to Porsche service on Saturday morning, was deemed unrepairable. Swapped out for a brand new tire. I’m one of the suckers that bought wheel/tire protection so it was free for me. I knew I was destined to need a few tires, my neighborhood is just wrapping up being built so screws abound…I gambled that it might be worth it. We’ll see.

Your tire-your life. I would not take the chance of doing a repair.

If the dealer takes your new tire back, I would cross that dealer off my list as they probably would resell it as new.

I've plugged a number of tires with no ill effect. You're close to the edge, which could be a problem. If you don't run the car hard, you're just cruising, I think (think) you'd be okay ... I'd do it. OTOH, if you explore the car's performance: 100+ MPH, hard cornering, certainly tracking; No. Replace the tire.
