Look what this 997 Sport Classic sold for at hammer price, and it’s just a tarted up GTS.

You can't look at weird one off examples like this of an indication of the market. This is just the result of two very wealthy guys trying to fill a hole in their collections. If you’re a billionaire and you have 19 of the 20 special variants you want for your “special variants wing” in your collection, you don’t really care if you pay $150k or $600k for the last one as long as you get it. Otherwise all you see every time you go in that room is the missing piece. New owner will never drive it and it will get sold for a reasonable price when he passes (or shifts his collecting priorities)

I'm wondering if car auctions are really just cover for money laundering like the art world is at this point.
