Our beater is a 2018 Subaru Forester XT. Turbo, AWD, tons of space for camping gear, and the interior is so bare bones you can basically just hose it down. I have two kids and really like the peace of mind you get in a Subie as far as safety goes, and it's something I don't stress about scratching or denting up a little. I nearly pulled the trigger on a Lexus NX300h which has a significantly better interior and MPG, but I'm glad I got the Forester since the wife and kids have beaten the crap out of it - I'd have been way more stressed about the little dings and interior stains if it was the Lex! Actually considering trading it toward a new Forester STi Sport as the missus really loves it - bought my dad a Q5e in 2021 and really want one of those, but again, until the kids are bigger I'd rather have a cheaper daily that I don't mind beating up a bit!

Back seats on IS's are tiny. I would go older RX for a hauling and dog car. Throw some PS4 A/S's on it and you can actually hustle them on a twisty road. Just boring AF to drive. Selling mine with fresh tires, new brakes, and new OEM suspension if anyone is looking (arrival of my 992 is bumping my cars one rung down on the ladder and my ladder only has two rungs).

Golf R - pretty close to 992 GTS performance with some additional practicality and GREAT fun (without dying) in the wet and/or snow!

Depending on your circumstances, can't beat a pickup of some sort with as big a bed as you can find. I've had one since the early '90s and simply could not get by without one. But I hunt, fish and hobby farm for fun. My wife has had an A6 of some sort since the early '90s as well.
Currently have an '08 Tundra 5.7. Extended cab with 6.5' bed (would love an 8') purchased new. Terrible mileage (15/18 real world) but that engine is 390HP and pretty much bullet proof. Mine is at 96K and still drives like new. And takes 87 gas.

Found it sitting at dealer lot in Ft Worth, got it for slightly less than sticker. It does the daily duty thing well and beyond! Sits very high compared to the 992 with bucket seats.

The 992 C2S is my beater - which in this climate just means it's the one I take when it is raining and/or I need to go on an un-fun shopping trip with a crowded parking lot and chance of door dings (e.g., grocery store, home depot, etc). It doesn't truly get beat on that badly...
I think it is mostly because it is the only automatic I have and therefore mentally it isn't a real sports car to me.

If I were spending $10-15K on a beater for my beater, the E90/92 NAs would get my vote balancing up reliability, driving enjoyment, and low maintenance.

I used to drive a Cayman with an older Mini Paceman for the bad weather. With the C4S I can drive all winter up to 4 inches of snow. Because we can't use studs, ice is always a no-go.
