Question 992.2 Mild-Hybrid (KERS)

It looks like hybridization might be all but confirmed for the 992.2 Carrera (2024 - 2028) models?!

Evidence:

Question: Would you be interested in a hybrid Carrera 911? Especially if it comes with a increased performance ('ring time, 0-60)?

My cleaning lady: 992.2 base + T will be non hybrid and a manual. S, GTS will be hybrids and no manual.

All those with a 2020 -2023 would be super happy.

I still think we are 1 full generation away from hybrid, but you never know.

Does that include KERS?

I think KERS will happen before full on hybrid.

Those of us with manuals even more so. As I don't see any sort of hybrid getting a manual.

Why?

Serious question. The hybrid Civic from 2004/5 came with manual tranny.

I'd be rather surprised to see Porsche engineer a hybrid that doesn't manage all that power and the gas/electric mix with anything other than their PDK or some evolution of the PDK transmission and put the control of that power in the hands of the driver and subject to a clutch. I just doubt it. Now I was unaware of the Civic hybrid coming in a manual, but still I would be surprised. I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibility, but I would set it fairly low within the realm of probability.

I've owned several hybrids. The absolute best one I've owned was a Honda Civic with a CVT Transmission. Certainly not a "Sports Car" (Duh!) but an extremely well engineered and a comfortable package. The Start/Stop function was 100% seamless. Other than the tachometer you couldn't hear or feel the gasoline engine stop or start. You couldn't move your foot from the brake pedal to the gas pedal fast enough to beat the system. I know, 'cause I tried . . . more than once! I'd like to imagine a Porsche 911 that'd be a light hybrid. Porsche has already publicly stated that the bell housing of the PDK Transmission was designed for a flywheel motor/generator similar to what Honda and Toyota have used. Properly programed with a PDK it could certainly be a credible answer to the POS Start/Stop system presently used. A boost in fuel economy and even a slight torque assist off the line from an electric motor would be kind of fun . . . . IMHO. If done properly, I'd be a buyer.

I don't really care what the next gen brings as long as it still comes with a manual option. (Deep down I hope the 911 eliminates the manual option so my on order 23 manual will be worth more)

I mean we’re sounding just like the folks who pissed and moaned when things went water cooled and then went to electric steering. I’m sure whatever it is will be brilliant. If it’s a KERS type system, it’ll probably be lightweight and modeled after F1 systems.

I'm on the same page! It's rumored to be based off the same system as the 919 Hybrid. That system only has a tiny ~2 kWh total energy storage system. From the 919 hybrid wiki page:

...The 919 Hybrid had two separate energy-recovery hybrid systems.

The rear exhaust system used a two-turbine electric generator to recover thermal energy from exhaust gasses, which exited from an off-central outlet on one side of the engine cover's dorsal fin.

The front system utilized a 185 kW (248 hp) motor–generator (MGU) on the front axle; when braking kinetic energy was converted into electrical energy, which was stored in water-cooled A123 Systems lithium-ion battery packs installed on the passenger side, and eliminating turbo lag....

The 919 Hybrid is actually available to drive in Gran Turismo 7. The car is fun to drive in the game with no perceptible turbo lag! If hybrid is good enough for the 919 its good enough for me!

Chris Harris apparently did a feature on it:

Unscientific survey so far:

61% indicated that they are interested in a hybrid Carrera while only 38% said they were not interested! Interesting! I didn't think those stats would be as high! If you go by the forums NA is the ONLY way to go!!

It all depends on how much weight all the pieces add - electric motor, battery pack, regen front brakes.

There have been several hybrids with a manual transmission. Honda produced two of them and there was another automaker that did one as well — make/model escapes me. Hybrids and manual transmissions are not mutually exclusive things.

I have to imagine that Porsche is going to keep 3 pedals as an option for their hybrid 911s.
