I'd always suggest a full-face helmet. You can always remove the visor or run with it up if you want more ventilation, but the closed face helmet has significantly more protection for your mouth and jaw area than a full open-faced helmet.

If you can, try to get to a race shop to try helmets on prior to purchase. Proper fit is important, both for comfort and for proper protection in an incident. I had an Arai helmet for years that fit ok, but I would routinely get headaches when wearing it. When the standards changed to SNELL 2020 last season I needed to update and changed to a Bell M8 Carbon. The shape of the helmet was a better match with my head shape and it is MUCH more comfortable for me.

The best helmet is the one that fits your head the best.

Have to go try them on. Fit and comfort is very personal- more so than even color of the car.

Aldo, prefer full versus open faced.

Good question gts992.

What about for taller drivers with limited head room? Is there a helmet that may work better in this instance? Thanks

I also think it depends upon requirements for the event. The autocross I participate in require a snell approved helmet, therefore excludes open face helmets as a well as modular helmets.

You need a Gurney Bubble

Have you tried yet? Seems the 911 has pretty decent headroom.

I think it depends the type of event. I only do lapping and i prefer the open face for the confort and the ease of talking with my passenger/instructor . But for racing I would probably prefer a full face for safety

My Region requires : Snell SA 2020 helmets are now readily available. For this driving season you must have at least a Snell SA2015 rated helmet or a Snell SA2020 rated helmet. Snell SA2010 rated helmets are no longer acceptable. A great friend and professional driver has said "and don't cheap out, buy the best helmet you can and a good set of coveralls. You'll be glad you did."

Hahaha yea I could use that in quite a few spaces!

Never had a helmet on and can't imagine there would be room for me. So I probably need the G Bubble or a cab

There are many open-faced helmets available that are Snell 2020 approved. Google “Summit” and search “Racing helmets” for a representative selection.

Check with whatever organizations are managing the track events that you want to drive it. Many of them require a full face helmet. I prefer an open face and think they look cooler, but I use a full face helmet because PCA requires it. And as one of the other posters said, don’t go cheap on your helmet. Buy the best helmet you can afford that properly fits. It could save your life.

Agree with everything stated. However, Porsche NA provides the 2-3 day driving instruction training at Barber Motorsport Park. This training includes two days of high speed track driving on a road course. Porsche NA provides open face helmets to all students who do not bring their own (which is a majority of students). The instructors also wear open face helmets. So, Snell 2020 open face helmets are not automatically precluded as some suggest. But agree that fit and safety are the priorities.

I went open face. It's cooler with better sight lines to gauges, coms, etc.
I am driving a car with stock safety equip still in place.

I've used full face for decades, mainly in closed cars. Much prefer them to open face, just safer.

I use both open and closed face helmets. I also ways make sure that integrated comms are a part of the setup. This helps you in the times that you have a passenger in the car or if you use a system that connects you back to the garage.

All of my helmets are Stilos.

Here is my most recent purchase:
