I speculate it may have something to do with aerodynamics. You may have noticed, a lot of EVs have closed wheel designs to help reduce highway drag and increase range (although they try to paint portions of the wheels black to make it less obvious).
This design sacrifices performance and handling for fuel economy.
The Carrera S wheels also seem to add more mass around the perimeter, referring to the webbing between the spokes around the circumference. This is bad for performance and handling. Ideally, you want to have you mass concentrated around the center, because it makes it easier to change the speed or direction of the spinning mass (the wheel). (Think of a gyroscope or flywheel).
