Default Suspension Question

Every now and then I’ll hit a bump in the road or a speed bump, at about 20-30 mph, and it feels like the front shocks are bottoming out. On one occasion when this occurred I felt it in the steering wheel too. In all instances, I was in Sport suspension mode, as I leave it on all the time.

It doesn’t seem normal. Does anyone else experience this or have any comments?

Thanks

Do you have SPASM? Personally I have found that SPASM does not have enough suspension travel and my car, when stock, felt like driving a lowered car so your observation is not very surprising… of course if you have regular PASM, the car should have a better ride and shouldn’t be bottoming out. I though stock PASM rode extremely well and handled very well. Unfortunately the car looks too high w/ stock PASM.

Did the dealer remove the suspension shipping blocks?

I've had some instances of some bumps/dips on the freeway where I hear a loud bang/strike below the car. No idea why.. and not sure which part of the car is hitting (or if its the shocks bottoming)

That might be too fast for a speed bump...20 to 30 mph (especially 30). Most speed bumps in Virginia where I live are designed for 10 to 15 mph rollover speeds. You can too a lot of damage to a car with too much speed hitting obstacles that fast, including damaging shocks, bending wheels, pinching tires, bending control arms. Rather than looking for a mechanical solution, perhaps slow it down a bit when crossing those? The only time I will cross speed bumps at more than 15 mph is in my pickup truck.

20-30 MPH is way too fast to drive over a speed bump.

Slow down.

Agreed with folks above. You’re taking speed bumps way too fast if you’re hitting them at 25-30MPH.

Is this something that can be checked visually without going to the dealer?

i've had this happen a couple times to me. Not on a speed bump, but while driving on back roads, a part of the road that goes up then down quickly. Felt / sounded like i scraped something underneath. So far, haven't determined any damage so hopefully not a big deal.

Speed isn’t the issue. I’m not referring tall/abrupt speed bumps. These are gradual and low made for keeping your speed down in the hood. Whereas I agree with you on the tall abrupt speeds bumps made to force you to barely roll over them.

you mean a speed hump like this?

i think most of us would still argue that 20-30mph is still too fast. I do 10-15 in this car and I don't even has spasm.

Yeah, we have tons of those. I still think 20-30 mph is too fast.

I go 5mph tops over those.

Happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Bottomed out on the front strut bump stops. I was sure the bottom of the car had hit the pavement it was such a jolt, but the bottom of the car has no marks.

Just look at the springs in the suspension to see if there are any blocks betwen the spring coils. If the car is too low, jack up the car a bit and you should be able to get a clear view of the suspension or drive on some uneven surface that unweights the suspension in one corner and you should be able to see. These are not from a 992 but you should see stuff like this btw the spring coils:
