What I Saw at the Dealership Yesterday

I made one of my infrequent visits to my dealership yesterday. My second key fob finally came in after six months' ownership so I went to get it programmed to the car. (I've had no warranty problems so far).
It was like a funeral home around the place. Quiet and not a lot of activity. The service department got my car in right away for the key programming and a complimentary wash. Not many (any?) customers there for service or sales.
The dealership had exactly two new cars for sale. A C4S Cabriolet and a green GT3.
I didn't check the window on the C4S. The GT3 had ADM of $120k! Since it was already loaded with options, the total ask was $329K.
It wasn't clear to me whether the GT3 had been pre-sold. The Mulroney sticker seemed to have a customer's name on it. I asked if it had been sold already and the salesman told me there were three interested parties.

I just read you post and realized you went to the same dealership whose inventory I was looking at last night. I was hoping to find a car to test drive, test fit my kids in and feel the difference in the sport seats and sport seats plus.

My dealership is the exact opposite of the OP. The service drive is packed !! Cars literally have to be moved so that cars can get out off the street . People are holding their older cars longer and they need service. Service writers are buried in papers around them and customers are sometimes waiting for the guy in front of him finish up. They are not short staffed . They are that busy. Sales are either very low mileage CPO cars or new cars that are already pre sold awaiting the customer,er for delivery. Rarely a new car pops up . Its never a 911. Usually a Cayenne or Taycan.

I don't know that they've had another 992 for test since, and that was last June.

While visiting in FL last month I stopped into one of the nation's largest dealers . There were 3 991's in the showroom and a Ferarri. The receptionist had to rustle up a salesman. He said they had a used 992 coming in and offered little interest or hope in selling new cars.
Pretty bleak.
Maybe setting the stage for the Tesla Sales model?
I did get offered a water though.

I don't doubt this one bit. In fact, my SA will agree with you and predicted exactly that when I picked up my GTS. Why floorplan anything when you can just take orders? Granted you will lose out on spur-of-the-moment purchases but if all/most new car buying goes to this, the must have it now folks will need to go used or go home period.

Dealers (all brands of cars) are quiet, empty, and making more money than ever in their history. A friend of mine just got a new Toyota - the sales manager told him he was pulling in $300K a year because of all the markups. That's Toyota. The sales manager staff at these Porsche dealers - are all millionaires now.
You will never get the Tesla model applied to all brands/dealers until the States reform their franchise laws, and the campaign cash given to them from the dealer networks is trying to stop that at every turn.

I've ordered multiple cars and my name has never been on the Mulroney. That's a new one to me.

You are in Winchester so I am guessing you went to Burlington. They’ve never had a large inventory and have always been a quiet shop in my experience, even pre-COVID and pre-semiconductor shortages.
