My dealer in NY is looking to convince me to have a K40 radar detector installed by them. What are you thoughts on K40 vs Escort? In general do you feel either are worth it? Also dealer is indicating if they install it as opposed to outside shop, the radar detector will covered under Porsche warranty,

I have a redline 360c by Escort and it is considered at the top end and I like it. I got the mirror tap kit and installed it less than an hour myself but I used the included mount (which is a suction) vs the blendmount which I thought was a) expensive for a mount, and b) dropped the detector much lower than I can get it with the included mount. Now it sits just barely below the mirror.

Get an R8, V1gen2, or Redline and a Blendmount. Will be much better detection and way cheaper.

I had my K40 installed by the dealer. I love it! Once installed, you cannot tell that the car has a detector. Mine included laser diffusors installed behind the front & rear bumpers. It warns me well before any speed trap & I can easily program it not to go off where I know there are false alarms triggering it. I feel very safe with it. It is expensive, though, but for me was worth it.

I have the Uniden R8 on 3 of my cars with mirror tap (including my 992).
In the past I have paid for installation of various brands, honestly my R8 set up is not only cheaper but more effective. The R8 is excellent.
Couple your R8 with Waze and you have a pretty good setup, specifically when there is at least a little traffic to help report (on waze).

I am having the Radenso RCM radar and ALP systems installed. ALP is hands down the best anti laser and Radenso is a top radar detector. I like that the integrate into the same display/control. I am having mine done at Autocraft on W 46th. PM me if you want details.

Antilaser priority. It's a laser jammer. If you see an officer on the side of a busy freeway, it's almost always a laser gun since they're able to target individual cars. Radar detector will not protect you against laser. Once your detector goes off for laser, they already have your speed in 99% of cases.
For radar, V1 Gen 2, Uniden R3/R7/R8, Escort Redline 360C are all quality units. Wouldn't touch K40. Lots of marketing. Dealer people will recommend it. Not actually good.
As far as the dealer saying it will be covered under Porsche warranty, it probably won't be. They may be covering it under their own in-house warranty by saying if anything goes wrong they will make sure it's fixed, but imagine this, if you took your car to that dealer and had it installed and then decided to start going to a different dealer, the other dealer is not going to cover that under Porsche warranty too. Also, what's to stop you from saying that you had it installed at a dealer when you really had it installed at another shop. Also a warranty can't be void unless they can prove the aftermarket part directly caused the failure. For instance, they cannot void the warranty on your engine due to having a radar detector. However, if your fuse box had an issue, they probably could.
