No offense guys but most are clueless when it comes to rally especially in the US.

I used to love watching the WRC, been awhile though. I’ve done a few track experiences, my next one I want is a rally experience/school. I used to race MX, body is too old for that but rally car would be a blast.

Walter Röhrl was used in one of the promo pics for the Dakar. He test drove it and I'm sure there will be some vids (if not already) of him talking about it. He drove the Quattro back in the day.

Given the limitation of A/T tires in terms of top speed, one missed opportunity was to give this model specific transmission gearing or at least a different (shorter) final drive: it would have improved the midrange response and also help in the downhill with shorter gears.
I suppose it was extra investment not worth the limited production.

Yes, that as well could have been a possibility.
We do not know yet the detail of the offroad mode and this may activate a specific electronic control of the differentials. I drove a Cayenne only once at an Experience Center offroad track with the offroad assistance on and I believe the differential in the transmission lack a mechanical lock but the electronics were working wonders to find traction.
Will be interesting to see what kind of electronic assistance this offroad driving mode will activate in the Dakar.
The presentation has been mostly marketing ( well done) but with limited technical details.
I am confident Porsche will not have done a half cooked job and we will probably discover several small modification from a regular GTS that are not yet apparent.
Cross my fingers.

Motor trend says this:

A locking center differential lends even more off-road ability.

The base Cayenne use brakes, ie will brake the spinning wheel to let the other drive. Higher spec Cayennes have an electronic rear diff, and electronic locking center and front diff.
makes those Cayennes very capable off-road.
since the Dacar is based on the 4 GTS, electronic diff in rear. Tried to find spec on front but couldn’t but suspect electronic as well based on how well these cars launch wo wheel spin.
with added center locking, will be very capable.
I see this as a very capable all year snow 911 vs off-road car.

Any idea regarding when the press will get a chance to test-drive the Dakar and when can we expect to see independent driving impressions coming out?

Check out Group B. Makes WRC look like child’s play. Banned because the regulations were relaxed and the rally cars of the time were truly bonkers. Mind blowing engineering. They would actually outrun anything in today’s standards. Remarkable. And we’re talking 1980s.

When I was a kid growing up in Germany, I thought Group B was what all Rallye was like. I used to watch it on TV just for the spectators opening up in front of the cars. It was insane back then and it's unfathomable now.
Walter Röhrl was/is one of the greatest drivers ever.

Allocations in Europe and car number
Just got a few updates from my Porsche Center here in Switzerland.
Porsche will notify the individual PC about their actual allocated number of Dakars sometime in January and only then they will consider the customer orders as final.
My PC was allocated 5 Sport Classic and they have delivered all of them already, they may get about 10 Dakars in total; in about 2 hours on the day the system was open to load orders they have put already about 14 tentative orders in ...
Customers with signed orders as of today (they are not accepting any more orders since the end of last week) have been requested to comunicated if they whish a specific number for their Dakar to be put on the limited production number plaque (xxxx/2500) ... I went for the most obvious ones, plus a more realistic alternative ... 953, 1984, 992 and 1970
Bottom line: only in January the customers will be sure about eventually getting a Dakar they have ordered last week.
