You hit the nail on the head. I started with my Guards Red build then went more sedate. GT Silver, Agate Gray then wanted more “color” so I did a Gentian Blue build. Freeze date was 9/14 and guess what I ended up with? Guards Red with sport tex interior! Go figure! I basically had 6 different builds before my freeze date.
I have done more configurations on the 992 than I ever did in my life . I even staggered them by the car color or options combination factoring in different levels commitment . For instance a car in what I view as a higher risk color would have optioned lower but not so low that if I liked it I would be disappointed in how it was optioned. I have one in every color and multiple cars in colors I like.
In my list of cars is an "essential only car" . That means placing myself where I once was when I could not afford the car and bought zero or extremely low option cars . The range (if curious ) is 32K from the most basic to the most loaded. There is every car in between too. I know I can't possibly be the most OCD on this because there are times when the configurator is slow at loading which implies a lot of guys are simultaneously building them. I also feel that the longer the wait .. the worse it becomes . I have seen many sit idle on a build only to restart and go all nuts even two weeks after he thought he was done . I have never seen anyone just build it on the first shot (except on YouTube which is nonsense .. he is only done because the video ended) .
I've lost count weeks ago. I do have my final build finally . It is confirmed and when that first allocation slot comes it goes right in.
So how many did it take you ? If you cant figure a number maybe a time length . If you are never done until it locks thats on the table too , Express your process because mine was very organized chaos but I am finally done.
I've spent less time picking my life long partner than I've spent on that configurator.
I started out with a base 718 Boxster and gradually had it configured up to a $120k GTS.
When my SA called to confirm I had a firm allocation she also mentioned she had 992 Carrera allocation available if I was interested.
It made sense to opt for the 911 when I was in the $120k price range.
I now have $122k 911 on order with a 12/5 delivery !!!!
This all took place since March of this year with about 20 total configurations.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
LOL . I can see how this happens . I have countless unused "no frills " builds of every car . My first 911 was a no frills car . Here is a no frills GTS (basic color , one or two items from premium package http://www.porsche-code.com/PNJWG8D1
I could easily live with this car but the idea of waiting 6 months to get something this basic didn't thrill me . It would if every cent counted .
Along the way I changed my dealership build three times and have chosen the higher option car . I had builds at every price level and in almost every color along the way . I lost count on the configurations but I took it a step further . I had friends and acquaintances building cars and submitting them to me . They got into it . There were at least 4 people who got into my build and put down reasons why they chose an option or a color . We talked about it either on the phone or in person . The age range of those submitting the builds varied too from as young as 22 to as old 66 which actually led to interesting discussions over their choices. Most were Porsche owners but not all. Ultimately my build was my build but there were points raised in the discussions which led to thought as well as more attention to detail .
The car went live on the configurator at 4AM EST on the day the GTS was announced . By 9 AM my dealership had my first (or three) builds placing me the first in line and the first order submitted . My deposit was given a month before . The hardest part for me was exterior color . The threads I created here were extremely helpful . I got a chance to see the car in different lighting and configurations in just about every color .
Too many to count. Toughest decisions for me are exterior color {Dk. Blue, Carmine, White, Aventurine} and interior { have multiples with deviated stitching, stitching and seat centers blah, blah, blah}.
If I got a miracle call and had 60 seconds to lock a build for my GTS allocation, would go with this one and never look back...PN3TPAF6
Currently spec'd in Night Blue {I know discontinued in Nov} so I can see pics in configurator. Actual color will be PTS W67 Navy Blue.
Started end of July.
I went to my dealer and sat in the room with the color samples and spec'ed a GTS out on their configurator with my SA (1).
I sent my SA a revision about a week later - added 930 Interior Package (2)
Two or three weeks later I changed to black brake calipers (3)
I don't anticipate any changes.
I mess around on the configurator now when I'm bored or if I want to "see" my future car but without intent to change my spec.
Sitting in V070 now.
No problem if it takes a year (10 months to go if so) - just gives me time to acquire more cash for the car.

Probably changed my “final” configuration 6 times. Exterior color choice twice ( Dolomite Silver to Aventurine Green) but then many, many combinations of other key options, like Sport Chrono, Sport Exhaust, etc. and being wary of ending up spending $15K more in options that I had originally planned. I am sure Porsche gathers, analyzes and measures all of this data and it would be fun to see the results. I would be curious to see how many owners stayed within their original budgets? I bet the percentages are low to non existent. I am sure many (unlike me) didn’t really have a budget…LOL. It would be fun to see graphs indicating adds/modifications to configurations on a graph, as the “lock” clock ticks down. I was one of THOSE guys….
I think I did around 15 or so, though I didn't submit more than 4-5 to my SA. Changes weren't all that major. Except the color change. And even that was two different blues though I considered about 3 other colors pretty seriously.

I've actually cut my cost down by 11K from where i started, by doing the configuration and reading numerous threads in here. I've realized there are quite a few things that aren't at all necessary.

The two changes I made (listed above) have mine up $2,390. I'm sitting at $155,650 including destination fee for a MY22 GTS. A similar S to my GTS spec is less than $5K lower.

I’ve spent so much time on it that my extremely frugal wife has started telling me I “Need” to get certain options like the RS wheels, a glass roof and SC. Not because she wants them or even has a preference mind you, its simply so I’ll shut up about them and stop boring her with YouTube video comparisons of one vs the other…
I have to think somewhere at Porsche headquarters that there are IT people keeping stats and betting on us like horses in a race, no? User with the most hours (consecutive/cumulative)? Most indecisive? Weirdest combos? Largest price swing day before build freeze?
