How many configurations did it take you ?
I have done more configurations on the 992 than I ever did in my life . I even staggered them by the car color or options combination factoring in different levels commitment . For instance a car in what I view as a higher risk color would have optioned lower but not so low that if I liked it I would be disappointed in how it was optioned. I have one in every color and multiple cars in colors I like.
In my list of cars is an "essential only car" . That means placing myself where I once was when I could not afford the car and bought zero or extremely low option cars . The range (if curious ) is 32K from the most basic to the most loaded. There is every car in between too. I know I can't possibly be the most OCD on this because there are times when the configurator is slow at loading which implies a lot of guys are simultaneously building them. I also feel that the longer the wait .. the worse it becomes . I have seen many sit idle on a build only to restart and go all nuts even two weeks after he thought he was done . I have never seen anyone just build it on the first shot (except on YouTube which is nonsense .. he is only done because the video ended) .
I've lost count weeks ago. I do have my final build finally . It is confirmed and when that first allocation slot comes it goes right in.
So how many did it take you ? If you cant figure a number maybe a time length . If you are never done until it locks thats on the table too , Express your process because mine was very organized chaos but I am finally done.

I started out with a base 718 Boxster and gradually had it configured up to a $120k GTS.
When my SA called to confirm I had a firm allocation she also mentioned she had 992 Carrera allocation available if I was interested.
It made sense to opt for the 911 when I was in the $120k price range.
I now have $122k 911 on order with a 12/5 delivery !!!!
This all took place since March of this year with about 20 total configurations.
🤣🤣🤣🤣

We did countless builds over a few week period before settling on our spec. Exterior color and rim choice were the main differentiators. We got down to three choices and then picked our favorite.
By the end of the process, my wife and I pretty much knew the configurator by heart and were more than a bit tired of agonizing over every little change. The level of option customization is pretty much a double edged sword. One on hand, you can get the exact car you want - down to the color of stitching on the seats. On the other hand, there are so many options that it can be a bit overwhelming to arrive at your perfect build.

I had done multiple configurations, settled on one, and then found an "incoming" vehicle via the Porsche website "Shop" tab that was only slightly different (better - included wheels I really wanted but was trying to save some $$ and side skirts). Contacted the dealer (600 miles away) by 8:30 that AM and by 5:00 PM that night it was mine with a successfully negotiated trade in (traded in 2019 Cayman with 5000 miles). Picked the car up 2 months ago and couldn't be happier. My opinions - there are MUST HAVES on configuration - to me those include exterior color, model/trim, body style, Sport Chrono, etc. Then there are things that are negotiable - interior color (has to be reasonable), painted trim/logos, etc. If you find something close - jump on it. By all means if you are ordering get what you want - but if $1-3K spending here or there prevents you from getting the car you probably need to consider the purchase overall.

I'm fairly certain the data on this, would show, (I am included), that over a two month build period, pre-freeze date, that the nearly 200 changes each of us make, are followed up by a last minute reversion back to the exact same dream spec you came into battle with, happens nearly 90% of the time. I keep trying to find a way to change what i have always wanted, only because there is a system that allows me to do this.

I spent far too many hours on the configurator when I should really have been working. My initial goal was to go for a very low optioned 992 as I had just convinced myself it's "just slightly" more expensive than the M3 I was originally planning to get. Things didn't go to plan and my 992 S ended up at 153k

I did 3 or 4, I had an advantage owning a 2020 992 C4S, and moving to a 992 Targa 4s, so I knew what I wanted and didn't having ~2 years with the 992 already. Otherwise it would have be 15-20 iterations :-)

2. Lost 3 used 991.2's from Apil through June. Had spoken with SA as to what I was looking for. They had a C4S Cab Allocation available - Passed on it in late May. Went back in early July with my wife who thought used pricing was getting crazy. They had just put in the build for an Oct build. Put in the order - V200. Single change the week of lock. Sitting at V210 now waiting on production. Pricing now seems like a bargin @ MSRP.

Is this like the Tootsie Pop thing?
I think I did around 15 or so, though I didn't submit more than 4-5 to my SA. Changes weren't all that major. Except the color change. And even that was two different blues though I considered about 3 other colors pretty seriously.

I've been on the configurator a bunch and still will hop on there from time to time, but my GTS build has only changed twice, with the second adding RAS. Similar to @Richard_Wallace, I think owning my 2020 C2 for 1.5 years has helped. I still think about the Turbo vs. Spyder wheels, colored tach vs standard, and colored vs. black seat belts, but if my order was to lock tomorrow, I'd be perfectly happy with my choices.

I spent roughly 20-30 minutes a day on the configurator for 7-8 weeks. Which in hindsight, is hilarious. I think I found it so addicting because (a) I've never ordered a custom car before and (b) Porsche provides so many ways to customize. I started by aiming to spend ~$125K pre-tax and ended up at ~$145K for my final build. What would be fascinating is if the configurator displayed the % of cars that come with each option. I think that would help folks determine what options truly are ubiquitous vs. more personal taste. It would also be fascinating if the configurator were able to show you some sort of "customization score" that calculated how rare your configuration is.

I had dozens of configurations. Those boiled down to 6 actual order changes during the 6 weeks from order date to freeze date. The main changes were color, but those changes influenced other changes: wheels, targa bar, interior. In the end, I went back to my original color -- Dolomite Silver. However, the experience helped me discover more about the car and the options. Because the car is so customizable, the process, while a bit nutty when you think about it objectively, made me content with the end result. Now the wait for delivery.
