Not so much 'essential' as good to have. Doesn't replace the good old "look left, look right, check your mirrors" routine but why not have it? Remembering of course that the mirrors on US spec cars are flat whereas everyone else gets aspheric mirrors, which are convex and provide a much wider field of vision.

Haha, you're right - I was confusing it with the lane keep assist.

Having said that, I'd not pay anything extra for the lane change assist / lighted notification, either. My neck / eyes have done pretty well so far.

For people who like the feature, I'm 110% for them getting it, though I'd hate to see drivers use it as a substitute for proper situational awareness.

I just picked up my 992 so perhaps I need more help configuring it my liking.

The only reason to get LCA IMHO is to give you some idea of the posted speed limit. I find that the older I get, the more I question my memory, ha!

That’s not LCA, that’s LKA. Welcome to the land of Porsche TLA’s.

A few days ago LCA kept me from hitting a car coming from two lanes over into the lane next to me. I looked in the mirror, nothing in sight in the lane next to me, looked forward and started to change lanes and the flashing light caught my attention. A car beside me two lanes over was moving into the lane next to me at my door level and I didn't see him. In todays driving conditions any safety feature is good to have.

Yup that’s what confused me.
I change my vote…I think LCA is useful.
It’d be better if they implemented it like BMW, where the steering wheel vibrates slightly if you turn and someone is in your blind spot.

It's not designed to keep you in lane, its function is to help check blind spot prior to lane change. Quite valuable and unobtrusive. Not Lane Keep, which is a royal PITA.

I’ve found it useful. With the passenger seat all the way back in my cab, i cant even see the rear quarter window and then the thick top is right behind it with a high narrow rear window. LCA is just an added safety feature I like, especially at night. Never had it in a car before so still getting used to looking for it when i normally check blindspots.

Maybe someone already mentioned it, but it is a decision making aid, not a replacement for your eyes scanning your environment before you make a lane change.

Use your eyes, your head moving left, your torso leaning fore and aft, aaaaaaaand that electronic blinkie light.

(just don't ceramic coat the damn LCA thing...)

Your 911 (assuming 992) is full of electronic aids. If not, you couldn't keep the pointy end forward.

Here is you auto without electronic aids.

I have had a similar system - call it whatever you want - in every car I have owned for over 26 years. I hit the turn signal, my wife's head automatically pivots to that side of the car and she emits a loud, high-pitched sound if there is another car anywhere in the vicinity. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I cannot find the switch that turns the damn thing off!

Hey OP,

My vote:
Lane change assist = thumbs up
Lane keep assist = not needed and in fact doesn't really work well for Porsches.

I have lane keep assist on my Toyota Highlander and I literally just turn it off.

LKA is crap… LCA is a necessity in a Cab with top up.
