Default Recent 1520 mile trip report

I took the 992 C4S with my 13yo son to visit family in Michigan. We did a similar run back in Jan 2020, but it was more fun to do it with the summies (summer tires) on as that winter trip included snow and freezing rain.

Notes/Observations
  • The combination of Waze and a radar detector (Uniden R7) continue to prove their worth. Waze alone is not enough. The radar detector kept us out of trouble on several specific occasions where Waze gave no warning.
  • The pace was brisk, especially on the way out. I am not going to disclose specific numbers -- think 80s Cannonballer pace.😉
  • Despite that pace, we still saw an average fuel economy between 27-28MPG, which to be clear, is insane. As a certified middle age person, that's a straight up engineering marvel considering the speeds that we were traveling.
  • With 23k miles on the car, things have opened up considerably. It's faster and louder than it was new. These cars get better with miles.
  • 5,000 miles ago, when I had the second service done, the tech said that I was nearly due for new rear tires. Well, they now have considerably less tread and going bald. Yes, this trip did them in. I was hoping that the tires would get me through the end of the season so that I could replace them with PS4S tires in Spring -- hope springs eternal. Unfortunately, after driving through rain at speed, I can't put off replacement any longer and ended up buying another set of rear Pirellis. For those wondering how I got so many miles out of them, the summies split duty nearly 50/50 with the winter tires. Fingers crossed that the winters will get through one more season, because they're well worn as well.
  • I used to do these longer trips in sport or sport plus, but I find myself now just using NORMAL mode and the sport response button. It's super convenient and it appears to help gas mileage considerably. I was chirping the rear tires north of 70MPH going into Sport Response mode. Yes, my tires are beat, but it delivers the goods.
  • Interestingly, unless the road surface truly sucks (looking at you Michigan), I now use SPASM mode on the highways. When you're hitting those high speed sweepers through the mountains, it's a big improvement over the standard mode and considerably more planted. I suspect that the higher spoiler position in that mode also helps. Again, I am taking the fifth on any "How fast were going?" questions, but I can tell you, go check that SPASM box when you do your build.
  • In long tunnels, the ACC sensor will throw a fault that will clear up after a few minutes once you exit the tunnel. Fascinating stuff going on there, but I finally figured out the pattern.
  • We witnessed an exploding truck tire in Ohio while we were in the adjacent lane. Loud noise and rubber shrapnel everywhere. I avoided as much of the debris as I could. Big pieces hit the windshield and left rubber marks, but zero evidence of hitting anything with paint. The windshield cleaned right up. We count ourselves lucky on that one.
  • Also, in the category of "not fun"... I didn't have the Bose speaker rattle when I started, but now, I do! I contacted my Porsche dealer today. My car had passed the speaker rattle recall test last year. It's an annoying thing to fail. That said, this is what warranty is for. I am getting it addressed with the new rear tires. No great shakes. It is interesting that the cars can develop the issue even if they didn't have it when new.
Overall, it was a great weekend blast and I am still learning more about this car. 👍

Thanks! I bought the car to drive it and will keep racking them up. 👍
The funny thing is that we're a four car household and my office is walking distance from the house. While it's ostensibly my daily driver, I don't really need to drive anywhere. Yes, those are 23k backroad blasting and adventuring miles.😜

I call BS. No way you're doing Cannonball pace without a wing...on the front!

Good write up, thanks. Two comments:
  • Re. the mileage in normal vs. sports / sports +. I'm starting to get suspicious in my MT car that they run a leaner map in 7th than in the lower gears. It's really hard to get anything like the same mpg if you cruise along at say 2000 rpm in 6th vs. 2000 rpm in 7th, quite the opposite to my old 997.2 which didn't care what gear you were in as long as the revs were low and throttle light.
  • Rattles, same experience here. My car developed a roof resonance and the passenger door rattle some months into ownership. Dealer has been unable to fix either yet.
Glad to hear you're putting the miles on though. Absolutely what these cars like.

I can say in my MT 80-85MPG in 7'th with CC on, I easily get 33-34mpg. granted I'm in Texas where its just long flat roads with min traffic in rural areas.

You state that you are replacing just your rear tires. I've been told that if there is a difference of more than 2/32's between the rears and the fronts that all four should be replaced in order to ensure optimal handling. Has anyone else been advised about this?

My service manager says that the wear difference won't an issue for the AWD system.
I think that he's right, because, as it stands, my rears are considerably more worn than the fronts, way more than 2/32 difference. I am past the wear markers on the rear tires and the fronts have plenty of life left.

Key thing is never to mix/match makes and models of tires on sports cars -- that can get bad interesting.

Hi guys, stupid question but I just got the Uniden R7 and cannot for the life of me figure out how to set the time to the correct time!! I've RTFM'ed (twice!) as well as read and searched Vortex.

Any clues appreciated. Thanks.

I thought that it came from the GPS. You just need to set the timezone and DST.
