What’s the verdict? Does PPF somewhat dull the look of the paint?

I don't PPF any of my cars - if I get a nick or a chip I simply fill it in with touch-up paint and work with it until it is imperceptible - takes some time, but have gotten extremely good at it. What I don't like about PPF is that when it does get a nick - there is simply no way to repair it except replace. IMO a PPF nick looks way worse compared to a paint chip touched up correctly. PPF does have some orange peel effect to it also. Everyone's taste/opinion is different here.

My new C2 in A1 black (non metallic) was delivered in June and I had it filmed with XPEL Ultimate 10mm and ceramic coated with XPEL Fusion plus. Entire car is ceramic coated but doors and rear bumper are only body parts not filmed. The installer was very good and one of the features that he liked best about the 10mm film was high gloss level. Looking very critically in different lighting levels, any difference in gloss, shine or paint depth between filmed and un-filmed areas is not something that my eye can detect. This is my first car ever with PPF so I have no experience with how it will perform over time. But for now, super pleased.

We can't speak for the other brands, but XPEL has not heard of ULTIMATE PLUS having a dulling affect on exterior paint, so I think you'll be alright. We recently treated this 2021 Targa at the Las Vegas XPEL install center with a PPF full front to give you a visual of how it looks when completed.

You guys are the best in the game! I have Full expel on my 992 that I took delivery of about a month ago, and couldnt be happier with the product. I just got my first small rock chip on the front, but the xpel did its job and my local installer said they can repair your product no problem. I can also confirm for the OP that it is virtually unnoticeable and did not dull my paint at all!
XPEL: The only thing that was not done on my was the headlights... do you recommend the product for headlights on 992? I know the 991 I was told the headlights do not hold up well having it on there. Has this changed?

Had mine done before taking delivery - Full XPEL PPF and ceramic coating.
Didn’t dull the paint at all.

My car with full PPF and Adam's Graphine "Advanced" coating shines better than it did with virgin paint... the gloss meter reads 95.5!

Well mine’s getting paint correction, XPEL Ultimate Plus, Fusion Plus ceramic, and window tint by XPEL’s company facility in Las Vegas. I’ll report back Thursday on how it comes out when I get the car back.

I have STEK PPF on my car and I use Mother's DIY CMX ceramic, probably 3 layers "stacked" in this picture. Doesn't look dull to me lol.

I've been happy with mine so far. Only 6 months on full XPEL PPF though. First time I have done it. I would assume there is a nice cocktail of UV stabilizers in the film but as others have said there will come a time when it needs to be replaced. I just don't know when.

I have a Lava Orange C4S. The PPF totally changed the look of the car. The best way to describe it is that it gave the color more depth. I opted against the ceramic coating on top of that, seemed redundant.

Default Great question!

LOTS of solid and real-life observations on this thread…very refreshing to read

as many have mentioned, the actual film out of the box, under natural lighting such as the sun, one would be VERY impressed with how invisible the film is compared to paint. the manufacturers keep pushing the envelope and are doing a great job

under artificial light, led or fluorescent, you begin to see the difference…but it’s subtle depending on the film

add ceramic coating to the film, and the delta shrinks even more

when the honeymoon is over, 12-36 months, if film is garaged and properly maintained by washing and routine annual cleaning, it shouldn’t be too far from when it was applied in appearance. Neglect the film, don’t wash properly, allow sprinklers to dry on the film, etc….then film is toast…hard to recover from daily driver that goes through car washes or has a detailer “waxing” it like old days

so, in reality, film CAN stay close to paint, but as time goes, nothing will ever match the brilliance, depth, and clarity of paint

for those that simply cannot stomach chips, scrapes, and usual wear-tear…there’s no substitute for ppf

ppf isn’t for EVERYONE…and there’s compelling pros/cons; simply comes down to the VALUE proposition for YOU

hope that helps a little

Nope - Agate. Color changes a bit based on the lighting.

The first time I saw it at the dealership outside in front of a row of trees I thought “this can’t be mine, it looks green”

Gloss meters? Jeez... just drive and enjoy the cars. The same people that say they can’t stomach bright colors are worried about how glossy their cars are?

Anyway, I did PPF my 992 front with Xpel and the reason was simple. When time to sell, I will remove the film and VIOLA! - a nice used 992 without nicks and chips in the paint...
