Agreed. The GT3 PDK gear selector/shifter does have something of a poseur factor to it -- it's trying to hard to look like the manual. Plus, it's one more thing for you to get impaled upon in a crash.
Looks like it is going to get yanked on by those inadvertently thinking it is a manual shifter.
Why not a set of push buttons . . . . for gear selection like in the 1950s Chrysler?
Actually into the mid 60's on Chrysler products as well as the Ford Edsel. Common terminology at the time was to call them "Typewriter Automatics", See Below:
. One version from Chrysler Corporation. (Chrysler, Desoto, Dodge & Plymouth)
. Ford's version on the Edsel.

For sure if the 8-speed PDK was the only transmission offered in a 992 this is what you'd have, as per the Taycan. The only reason it's where it is in the 992 is because of the need to accommodate MT and GT cars.
I don't object to the shaver as much as the separate P and M buttons. They could easily be accommodated as part of the shaver itself, for instance with an M button on the thumb side and a P button on top. Or by moving the shaver left and right. Also, the dirt and debris trap that surrounds the shaver is just bad design. The only way to clean it is to with compressed air, which most don't have handy.
Replacing the P/M buttons with a garage door button would be great ... I've given up on the PCM garage door button and put my old controller back on the sunvisor.
reorganize the gauges so either all are visible or just do away with the outer two (if you don't miss it or the info is unimportant then get rid of them),
redesign the seat belt tensionner so you can prevent neck sores,
remember settings between starts such as heated steering and seats,
do away with the M as stated above and have an actual shifter,
redesign the PCM so that priorities are coded (meaning I don't need to have critical functions {like HomeLink} waiting on the ambient lighting module to finish...)
disable FAL on turning the engine off
clear up the disinformation concerning US delivered 992s and oil requirement and make it available not only through dealers
It may have been covered but the annoyance is still present in many people's comments and it's only via the constant reminder (rather than acquiesence) that something may happen to revert or improve on this and other points

Agreed. Having the option is better than nothing at all. Though I’ve personally never shifted using the console over paddles. I find it redundant, while trying to pretend the car is a manual.
