Default So apparently I'm being unreasonable selling a car to a dealer and expecting them to

So apparently I'm being unreasonable selling a car to a dealer and expecting them to hand me a check at time of sale after I sign the title over. I'm not going to name the dealer or which car, not trying to badmouth, just curious of others' experience.

Was in last week, they made an offer (no lien, $80k check to me) and I thought we agreed on today for the sale. I call this morning to setup a time and he says the check will take a few days what time do I want to come in today? They were expecting I was going to sign over the car for an $80k IOU 'checks in the mail'! Never heard of such a thing. A million things can go sideways from clerical errors to bankruptcy of the dealer. I asked him to let me know when they would have the check ready to do the deal and I never heard back, so apparently I was being unreasonable?

Stay away from them -- you should not hand over your car until you have a good check in hand

No. Just imagine if the opposite is reasonable.

"A good check"? That is not certain. I would not hand over the car until I have the funds wired into my bank account and/or you see that executed in front of you, then hand over the keys. That is quite reasonable.

In fact, I would not hand over the car and title till their check was deposited onto my account and cleared my bank.

Your definitely not unreasonable!

Porsche owners can be scumbags too, btw. If I were a dealer, I would have a certified check in hand to give to the owner upon delivery of the car. Transferring funds to an owner BEFORE I get possession of the car? No way.

this is normal
I have sold multiple cars to dealers and never received a check when I signed the title
and never had a problem
dealers have a business structure , and procedure might vary depending on multiple factors but in general
you agree on price with manager
paper work is signed , then paper work is processed by the " back office" /
back office issue check
check mailed to you

Maybe it used to be normal, but it's not how business is done now. If you sell a car to Vroom, CarMax, or Carvana, you get the check in hand when the car title and possession are transferred.

I do agree with you that there is no risk, as there's a contract. But this dealer needs to get with the 21st century and pay upon delivery. That's what they expect of us and the reverse should be the same.

This is completely normal. I've worked in the dealer world for 20 years and never seen a check handed out at the time of car turn in. I realize that this may be frustrating but I've come to understand why. I've seen fees owed on the car in regards to tickets, registration, and other dmv fees that weren't known up front. Typically it is a 3-5 business day turn around on payment. I wouldn't be concerned if it is an established dealership. If this is "jimmy's european" that has only been open a few months then I wouldn't do it.

CarMax yes, no experience with Carvana, but not my experience with Vroom last year. We did everything online and via email/snail mail; I had to sign and send my title in, they picked up the car a few days later, and I received the check via FedEx a few days after that. I definitely did my research ahead of time and it still felt a little uncomfortable, but I doubt any of those online dealerships will give you a check based on what you tell them throughout the process. That wouldn't make sense from a business standpoint IMO.

I am referring to traditional dealers not Carmax/Carvana etc
the latest two cars I sold were within the last 6 months
