I am 71, Talked my Dad into buying a 1970 911 T Targa new when I was in high school. He hated the car - no A/C and the manual transmission he found annoying. When I needed a car to get to high school and back he said “take that one@ rather than buy another car. He preferred his four door 1971 Cadillac Broughm. He was not into cars. Targa cost $8,500 new which was the same price as the Cadillac. Fifteen years later I sold the Targa for $8,500 - to buy a Toyota Family Van.
Two years ago- heart attack and quad bypass. Been financially rational for the last fifty years and realized time to indulge- the future is here for me.
replaced the lost 1970 Targa with a 2021 Targa 4 - thought that would replace the car I should never have sold. But all it did is infect my brain with an addiction.
I got to know three different dealers really well - my “drug” of choice dealers and they have no mercy.
Got a call from the Targa dealer - he had an allocation for a 2022 GTS Boxster. Wife needed her own Porsche I told myself. Then the salesman I got to know locally offered me a GT4 - well I thought the Targa 4 was not really a Porsche performance car. I was getting hooked on the configurator and waiting for each car to come across the ocean.
Then we needed to replace the Ford Flex as our daily practical car- a dealer I meet at a Porsche Treffin, said he could get me an allocation for a Panamera 4 Executive hybrid -this was a practical decision and did not indulge that porsche sports car addiction. Ordered this Porsche sedan in PTS Sapphire Blue Metallic —
Then the 992 T 911 was announced - and it was offered as a manual- A fun car while the Targa was a luxury lunch wagon and the GT4 was a track car and the GTS Boxster was my wife’s car so it doesn’t count of course. Sales manager says he would give me his first 911 T allocation if I traded in the GT4. Honestly ai was not a fan of the GT4- kind of small inside for my 6’2” frame carrying 280 pounds - and the T was a 911 and a manual. Trade in value was offered at my cost.
I mentioned to my now friendly sales manager/ salesman- that I would really like the black gloss aerokit on this 911 T. Was told by several dealers it was not available any longer. So he calls a friend of his at the factory and they approve the gloss black aerokit. Selected the new Rubystar Neo for the color to contrast with the gloss black pieces. But about the same time my other salesman friend - called and also offered me a T allocation. I had an out of body experience as I heard myself I will “take it”. Ordered this second T as a more sensible build - guard’s red and just a few options. My son at 40 decided he wanted a Carrera - I was able to get him an allocation for a 2023 base Carrera. They say addiction tendencies are passed from father to son— a genetic thing. All these were bought at msrp.
Then about six months ago I park my truck at Lowe’s to get some caulking and the phone rings. I see the name of the porsche dealer that sold me the first Targa. Preying on the struggling and vulnerable addict is cruel. He says - I have an allocation for a GT3 — has to be submitted today and it will lock tomorrow.
It isn’t me - someone else says “I will take it”. I jump on the configurator - in my truck- and before I get out of the truck to walk into Lowe’s I have spent $250,000 plus $30 worth of caulking. I did not prudently buy however a new caulking gun - I decided I should be financially prudent and just use my old caulking gun.
I even agreed to pay for the first time a premium over Msrp as well. Somehow $40,000 plus seemed reasonable. A step too far I told myself I would never make. Only crazy guys pay a premium over msrp.
I did trade in eventually the red 911 T (168 miles) - to help convince my wife I was not a complete maniac.
so today I own a 22’ GTS Boxster, a 2021 Targa 4, a 2023 Panamera Executive, a 911 T and a new 911 GT3 2024. And along this path I ordered a Corvette C8 convertible at msrp which seemed like such a bargain.
They say that the anesthesia used in a major operation like a bypass surgery - can change your personality and damage your brain’s ability rational decision making.
I should mention that my wife loves cars and driving fast - she never helps by stopping the decisions to buy another car and then another car.
Still have room for another car - and late one night I indulge by playing with the configurator - what about a Turbo S cabriolet. I don’t have a cabriolet my damaged brain whispers in my ear.
Next Morning - emails go out- “interested in an allocation for a Turbo S cabriolet “- I can trade in one of the current cars…
But I know I probably won’t - that would leave an empty spot in the garage.
I am finding I fall into a melancholy when I am not monitoring MY Porsche to watch the progress of another car I don’t need.
Where does this end? It can’t end well right?
When an addiction starts causing family issues- my two adult kids now refuse to discuss or look at - or ride in any of my cars - I wonder why? Must be their concern for my mental health.

First Porsche was a new 964 Carrera II in 1990.
Car was literally a lemon and as a result I swore off Porsche's for awhile.
Came back in late 2017 to buy a GT4. Sold it after 5 years and graduated to a GT3 Touring.
Age: 64
