IMO, the direction car manufacturers should go is putting more content (if desired) onto the head’s up display directly in front of the driver’s eyes. Moving the driver’s attention down, and to the right (or left)...is a safety issue. Large screens are cool, but lets see some of that, the more commonly used functions, projected to the heads up display.

I’ll also add that all this other stuff about not being able to play video games on the 992’s PCMC screen, etc.... is just utter noise. Complete nonsense. What needs to go on the top of the list of future changes are on things that will make the driving experience even better.

Who else detests this design trend? It makes the infotainment system look like an afterthought and strikes me as lazy engineering. I confess that this has been a factor in my latest vehicle purchases.
Thank you Porsche for avoiding this aesthetic atrocity, even if you tend to lag others in the software dept.
/rant off.

I work in the defense industry and modern jet fighter cockpits are going all glass with touch screens as well. Granted the heads up displays are full of information and you do cycle through some of the “features” using buttons on the HOTAS but large area displays and touch screens are the future.
Having said that I’m not sure I do anything with my PCM besides hit CarPlay or I might send directions to the nav from my phone. I would like a heads up display though.

Nothing attractive about this...it really looks like an after-thought addition, rather than something that was an integral part of the cabin’s design. But I see why Musk’s designers did this...it’s cheaper, easier and much quicker to manufacturer than having to fit a built in screen, and associated buttons around the screen ..into the dash.

In fact, if having less than stellar infotainment drives away buyers who want to play with touchscreens while driving slowly, then Porsche can focus on creating a better car for people who enjoy driving

As I sit here at my home office with a 34" monitor in front of me and a 27 inch to my right... I am ok with this trend, and if you really want to be honest - get use to it, as it will all trend this way.. More data, information, entertainment, etc. You have seen nothing yet.
Not saying I still do not love my analog cars, but if you seriously do not think that is where every car will be in the next 3-5 years. Better buy something an hang on to it. As this is what you will have from this point on...

But as Tesla is basically a glorified iPhone on wheels, many of us want to maintain the functionality of modern technology without it taking away from our desire to have a driver’s car, first and foremost. Porsche is striking that balance pretty well, but as long as some folk folk opine about making the tech ever more prominent, companies like Porsche are forced to divert energy towards that instead of fine tuning the engine, handling, suspension, etc.

No one is saying that a touchscreen should entirely be gone.

Stop lying, troll. This is the first Tesla photo I have posted, and the financial data on Tesla is accurate on the 1Q of FY21. Deal with it.
