Question Manual Steering

I received a call from my dealer SA yesterday. My new 21 C2S Cab is being held in San Diego for TPMS and a Electronic Steering chip. He said the TPMS should be resolved in a week or so.

Here is where I have questions. He said they may install manual steering now and my dealer would install electronic steering at a later date as a recall.

Anyone have a clue what manual steering means? I ordered the car with the standard steering.

My guess is there will be no electric assist. Can’t imagine how difficult that would be at parking speeds.

Umm...I don't think so

First of all - I'm not entirely sure an EPS car will steer without assist.

Second - have you ever driven a car with blown power steering? It's practically undrivable at low speeds. Manual steering racks have different gearing ratios from a powered unit.

There’s nothing wrong with a manual steering rack, but I am not sure that I would want a car with EPAS delete.

Yep

Power steering delete ≠ Manual steering

Another thing to consider. With power steering the alignment of the front wheels is significantly different than it is with manual steering. With power steering far more of a Caster Angle is used in the alignment of the front wheels. This provides a very nice "on center" feel when everything is working correctly. However, shut the power steering system off and this Caster Angle makes moving the wheels off center a real bugger. The physical dynamic, is that you're trying to raise the car (slightly) with the steering system. That you're trying to do this without the benefit of a hydraulic or electric assist, can make this something of a challenge.

The chip to which SA's referring might handle some aspect of LKA auto-steering duties. No chip, no auto lane correction and "steering" is manual. Just a guess.

Since, I did not go for steering assist, I’m wondering if I misunderstood the SA or he misunderstood PNA.

Adding the Power Steering option only changes the tune on the steering. The car still has electric power steering even if you don’t choose that option.

Power steering option is also a software feature, I believe. There is no dedicated hardware to it.

That may not be the case with PSP on the 992. Apparently, unlike the 991, it can’t be enabled on a car that didn’t have it from the factory. So, there may be some other difference at play.

It’s the electric adjustment for your steering column that comes with your Memory Package.

Not related to “Power Steering”, though I can understand the confusion.

That sounds right. I can live without that.
Thank you all for your help.
