I don't know why Alfa can't make the cars near 100% reliable but there's no denying that the car/chassis/drivetrain are superb. There's a reason why journalists kept picking the Giulia QF over other sedans even almost to this day. It's nearly a 10 year old chassis (and even older if you consider that its rear sub-frame is lifted off the Ferrari 458) yet it beats other sedans for fun and performance. In the end and no matter how you slice it, the car is still a sedan and it keeps up with sports cars weighing 5-600 pounds less. It's a great achievement and sadly, Sergio Marchionne's untimely death meant the end of Alfa. A 992 higher spec 911 is the better driver. But compared to standard 911s or even some higher spec prior 911s and any BMW M, Mercedes AMG etc, the Alfa beats them 100%.

Chris Harris, whose opinion I happen to respect and usually agree with, and who's also 50x more talented at piloting these sports cars than 99.9% of people, including myself, picked the M3 over the Alfa in the video above.

Alfa obviously does a tremendous job of inspiring emotion and brand loyalty. In the end, if you love your Alfa, and think it walks on water, that's all that matters.

Mate, they walk on water and you drink backwards from a goblet containing the finest Italian vino rosso while doing that in them.....

It may walk on water, provided you can get it to start!

Well isn't this a blast from the past!

Might as well provide an update: I traded in my 2019 Cayman GTS for a new 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio about a year ago. So I'm on my 3rd Alfa and second Quadrifoglio (Giulia Ti, Giulia QV NRING, Stelvio QV). And to be clear I didn't even have an awareness of the brand until my friend suggested I test drive a Gulia Ti way back in 2017. The rest is history. Cayman was a great car, but the tall gearing required faster driving than I was comfortable with to really enjoy it. And the factory ECU programming dumped turbo boost prematurely to try to simulate a naturally aspirated engine, making the car slower than it could have been under certain conditions (I verified this behavior in the Porsche Track Precision app). The Alfa Stelvio is of course completely different. Doesn't corner nearly as well - physics and all. But it's easily the best handling SUV and a riot to drive at street-legal speeds with its short gearing. I guess you could say it has excellent "driving dynamics."

As for my next mid-engine fix: I've been on the preorder list for a Manual Lotus Emira FE since it was announced. Still has taller gearing than I'd like, but the manual gearbox and hydraulic steering bring another level of connection to the car and the Lotus handling is sublime (had an opportunity to test drive an Emira and it was pretty awesome). My dream mid-engine car would be a GT4 RS, but that's not happening.

Alfa and Lotus: two of the least reliable brands in one garage. Or are they? Can't wait!

Cheers!

Hillarious. Own an Alfa and you’ll never mention 992 and ‘issues’ in the same sentence again.

Well, I've owned 19 Alfa's and this bloody BMS/battery issue on my 992 has been a real pain; 3 batteries and 4 workshop visits, 2 on a flat top, in a car less than 3 years old that has until recently met the PCNA standard for 'regular use'. So yeah, not meaning to be antagonistic but 992 and issues live very much in the same sentence in that context - and still love the 992; maybe I'll do a 3-years old post soon

Alfa's are very fun indeed! My wife had the Stelvio for about four years loved it and then eventually traded in for a Porsche Cayenne, which at times i can tell she regrets. at the time we were so close to getting the quadrofoglio for her but she didn't want wake up our neighbors (which ironically i do now in my 992 911).

she sold partly because she was having some battery issues in her Stelvio and her car was hit twice (neither was her fault) but also because the Ferrari mechanics in our area charge more then the Porsche mechanics and the warranty was ending. but her current daily Porsche Cayenne is warrantied to 2027. so we are going to get her something special in a few years.
