Wow. I think most car experts would disagree with your assessment. But, you are entitled to your opinion.
Which experts are those? Honest question, not spiting you. Chris Harris and the likes of many always prefer the NA variants. Experts looking to break lap records? AP and other Porsche execs trying to sell cars? Sure, the 991.2 and 992 are faster no doubt, but soulless? Come on now... My 991.2 TTS feels soulless because the car is on permanent mute mode. The quietest 911 I've ever driven, and for that matter it just cost me 10k dollars for a Kline Inconel exhaust to wake it up. Just installed bypass pipes in the meantime and the car sounds like it should have at the very least from the factory. It has a proprietary note now, and it's better than the 3.0.

The 991.1 with PSE is bliss. Even a 981 Boxster Cayman sounds orgasmic. Some say the 3.8 GT3 sounds better than the 4.0. Also, the 3.8 GT4 sounds worlds better than the 4.0 GT4. Also, all the true so called "experts" dub the 997 GT3 as THE 911 to end all 911s.

Let's be frank. In which way is the 992 more exciting than a 991.1 variant? The torque is nice, but it sounds like crap. The torque is cool, buts its a one trick pony. My TTS sounds like crap.. A $230k car, I can sleep at night knowing that, accepting that, and living with that. That's something the vast majority of 991.2 and 992 owners cannot do, but I don't blame them. Nobody owning a car that they paid so much for wants to accept the fact. It is what it is.

Point: The NA variants offer a thrill which is unmatched by the Turbo variants. At the very least, the 3.8 turbo engines offer a better noise than the 3.0.

Signed, a former 3.0t owner and lover. This is not to say the 991.2 and 992 suck, they don't. They're brilliant, and I would most definitely own one again.

I'm genuinely sorry if I come off brash, but it's hard to translate tone through text. The notion that the 992 is elite to everything else is lame. Blame cafe standards, government, and other bureaurcratic BS for the castration of the 911 and other Marques.

I’m happy you are happy with your 991.1 Everybody has different metrics for what they like or makes them happy.. I like contemporary homes, while most Americans are stuck on Colonials.

As to your question, “which experts”? Umm, pretty much all of them.

I loved every Porsche I’ve owned. Even my first one which also happened to be my first car, an 84’ Carrera Targa. Now that car, despite having around 1/2 the horsepower of recent 911s was a white knuckle ride every time I go in it. Carrying too much speed into a turn, you better ride it out. Don’t upset that rear end unless you want to go spinning like a top. That 911 sent me spinning more than once. No electronic nannies, no power steering, not even ABS. I don’t think I ever felt truly relaxed in that car particularly when I drove enthusiastically around a corner, but I did love it. Something about a whirring flat 6 behind you, a moonlit sky, a windy road that you could read as if in Braille, through the steering wheel.

Every generation has gotten better. Some brilliant engineering has turned a quirky rear end happy sports car into the most competent, well mannered driving machine you can buy. Boring, maybe. I don’t white knuckle sweat anymore if I take too much speed into a turn, but I can still read the road as if in Braille, and that whirring flat 6 behind me while more growl than shriek still puts a smile on my face every time I press down on the accelerator. I’m sure there are more viscerally exciting cars out there but I’ve never found one that made me want to trade in my Porsches. Give it time and I think you’ll see what I mean.

Yeah thats good, and people having different tastes=progression. If everyone thought the same and had identical tastes, life would be boring. I have a 991.2 TTS but still yearn for a .1. Anytime I see one I can't stop looking and I smile. Hence my future 992 GT3 purchase... It's that engine.

I love the tuning capabilites of the 3.0. That's unmatched and can make the car also exhilarating.

As for the experts, we must watch different people. Maybe we're both biased... That said, to the guy above. He nailed it. No 911 is a POS and I would take a 911 over anything out there. They're all astonishing.

Maybe the OP would like a C7 Z06. I had one and found it very exciting. Very visceral. They can be had pretty cheaply, and if you don't like it you aren't out a bunch of money. As far as 991.1 GTS vs 992 base, I can say that I personally find the .1 more entertaining. That is the only comparison I can make since I haven't driven all the other variants.

I'll second the C7 Z06 idea but in manual only. The automatic is good at the drag strip but gets boring as most do. It also comes with a fine multi mode exhaust system. 650 ft lbs of tq at like 2500 rpm accompanied by a raw v8 howl if selected will cure the boring car syndrome.

Not to mention the automatic is plagued with issues, the manual not so much.

Yes, we must be listening to different experts. The 992 GT3 is 4.0 liter, not 3.0. 😳. Non turbo, developing 510 hp.

Every car that I’ve owned since the mid-80’s has been a turbo...and every one of them I have been able to easily “tune” to give me substantial boosts in HP. Key word is “easily”. Now, I don’t anticipate having to attempt that with my 992 S, as I think the 443 hp will keep me entertained for quite some time....not to mention, I’m not tuning anything while under warranty.

As for personal tastes - for me, unless I do the majority of driving on the track (which I won’t), the huge wing on the back does nothing for me, and in fact, detracts from the 992’s beautifully designed hind quarters. Driving the winged GT3 through my neighborhood would scream, “boy racer”, or at least, “midlife crisis”. Not my thing. As it is, just having a Porsche, any Porsche, is going to bring attention, which I don’t crave.

It is. Do you have links to any such data or articles?

I only had the manual but it was common prior to 2017my for the automatic transmission models to overheat on road courses. But that is the only problem I’ve ever heard of. The fix was to short shift when possible.

OK. Saw a few posts about this on Rennlist from the 2007-2014..and all seem to indicate the issue was insufficient/poor cooling when driven hard on the track. I haven’t seen anything since about 2016 on any PDK cars...so maybe Porsche corrected this issue? regardless, the number of complaints were few. But thx for the info.

It was corrected when they made the switch to full line TT engines.

Now we can get a TT Carrera - without having to spend TT money.
