Default Question about engine lugging

Coming into a corner and downshifted to 3rd with the Revs probably around 5K came out of the corner and put my foot down. Car accelerated very nicely but did not feel that kick in the back acceleration.

I am assuming the car would hav been okay to come out of the curve in second. Staying in third though does that mean that the car was lugging or just not optimal gear for that exit?

What were the revs coming out of the corner?

Lugging is high gear with low RPMs...5000RPMs is not lugging.

Lugging is more like what happens when you are driving in “Normal” mode and already hit 8th gear at 35 mph with RPMs hanging out at 1k

Thanks all, I guess there is a big difference between not optimizing your gear selection and lugging. I guess years of driving stick and worrying about the money shift always left me a little cautious but when I put it in Sportsplus automatic I am always amazed at how low the gears will drop and so especially having the protection of the PDK I should be a little more adventurous when driving in manual mode.

4k is definitely not lugging, but you might not have had boost on tap to give you that kick - were you in normal or sport or sport plus mode?

I'd say below 1,200 is lugging.

I think it’s more nuanced than that. Manual top gear pushing it to the floor at 1200 RPMs...that’s lugging in my book.

I feel the 992 transmission lugs the motor around 1500-1800 before it shifts.

Blame it on fuel emissions.

The turbo motors push pretty hard at 4-5K. 5k in 3rd means is ~60 mph. Were you just expecting acceleration in line with a lower speed? Or if the roads were wet or cold, possible traction intervention?

I acually don't mind the aggressive upshifting in Normal. The car adjusts shift patterns so quickly when it recognizes aggressive driving. Plus turbo torque makes it less of an issue compared to an NA motor.

Even gen 1 PDK’s in 997.2’s (NA engines remember) would shift up at 1500rpm with light load in normal mode. That’s how they get their mileage figures up, and why we have 8-speed PDK now (and 2k at 70mph in 7th in a manual 992). Factory thinks it’s OK even if not desirable.
