is there a way to change the color of the tach numbers so you can see them??
I ordered the white ring on the tach for contrast. the configurator shows black numbers on the white ring. Unfortunately when you turn the ignition the numbers turn to white. I cant believe it, makes it almost impossible to read in sunlight. Is there a way to have them stay black with the switch on?? Really ****-es me off. the standard tach has white numbers on black easy to read . This is like like an eye test! carl

You can see the needle. After you're acclimated to the car, the numbers don't mean a whole bunch. It's an annoyance, but it is also character.
I suspect you can fix the problem by ordering a new tach, but as pointed out the labour cost will likely be high - as well as the parts cost. I doubt you can buy the dial separately.
i wonder if Porsche would replace the tach if the configurator misrepresents the product as it is delivered or how it works when it is in use.
I wholeheartedly agree that seeing the needle is primary but the white band also makes it hard to see the critical end of the needle and obscures the rest of the visible needle by about 25% too. This would be a problem even if the illuminated numbers did not disappear against the white band.
The disappearing numbers are the issue to take to Porsche and if the fix is a normal tach, that also cures the white band problem.
Why this can't be configurable (meaning chose whatever your mood is today) is simply $$$$. No technical obstacle as to why they couldn't design it with 3 or 4 colors/wavelengths.
This is a design flaw for sure. I wonder if you would get any traction with Porsche Customer Service.
My 993 has white dials. When the backlight is on, it's very hard to see the numbers. Thankfully, I rarely drive at night. 23 years later and the same problem - I doubt Porsche is interested. It's a heritage feature!
Does everyone have the same problem? I can't believe that Porsche would design it that way. On my GT3 with white gauges the face is white and numbers are dark during daylight. When it's dark outside, the gauge face goes dark and the numbers turn white.

Earlier model 911's with white instrument faces were the same, but the numbers weren't lit unless the lights were on. Not daylight running lights, rather the main beams. The finish though was not a simple white paint, I can't recall the term they used but it was some sort of special finish intended to go dark like you say when natural light dropped off. But this visibility issue still happened around dawn and dusk, for 1/2 an hour or so the lights would be on but the dials still showed white. Once natural light dropped off as you say the faces went dark and all was good.
