Default 991.2 s or 992 base

Hello folks,
one of my close friends is trying to get either a 2019 911 s with low miles - appx 115-120 k or do a build when available a 992 rwd carerra for 125-128 K with nice full leather interior . He definitely wants a rwd car . I see many folks who moved from 991.2 S to 992/992S

can someone provide info as owners have a better perspective
1) I think the 992 PSE sounds better than 991.2 s with pse for USA models , correct ?
2) I think rear wheel steer is more of an impact on 991.2S over 992 where the effect is subtle due to wider 992 track - that is my feedback to him - true ? And of course you cannot get rear wheel steer on base
3) Sunroof - is there a difference in airflow with glass sunroof open in 991.2 over 992 - brief test drives felt there is more wind flow into the cabin in 991.2, right observation ?
4) Overall from a fun driving perspective , 991.2 S vs 992 base , which way to steer ?

Thanks in advance for your feedback

Looks like you’ve done your homework

1. Yes. PSE is improved on the 992. Many journalist have noted that the 992 has finally brought back some of the air-cooled sounds of past into the cabin. Exhaust note is balanced & not overly loud.

2. The 992 has 10% more direct steering input without RWS & 6% with RWS compared to the 991.2. It’s not a necessary option given the wider track - but some like it. Definitely a YMMV option.

3. I don’t buy sunroofs

4. Porsche has worked some magic with how the car delivers power in the 992. I believe they accomplished this with the turbo layout, which is now symmetrical. The compressor & turbine wheels now rotate in opposite directions which helps the turbos spool faster & deliver better response. That said - the 991.2 will still have 40HP+ on the 992 base. So he would need to trade the improved handling in the 992 (wider track) & improved power delivery (symmetrical turbos) - for more power in the 991.2S.

First world problems - can’t make a wrong decision here

GL

I understand that the approx. 40HP extra in the 991.2 S may not be much when comparing to the 992 8 speed PDK ??

Definitely the Base.

The 992 is just a better overall car. Even in base form it is a significant improvement over the 991.2 iteration of the 911. As good as the last generation was, it really is not match for this generation.

Agreed. Important to note that published Porsche 0-60 times (and real-world figures) have the base 992 on par with S variants of the 991.2. The S versions of the 992 are another level of quick.

You didn’t mention tech, although from the questions perhaps driving experience is the focus here. Either way it’s worth noting the 992 is at least 1 gen ahead of the 991.2, some would say more. Some would also say this is not a good thing but you takes your money.....

I thought about 991.2 gts vs 992 s. At the end I think the 991.2 interior is way to dated...

OR 991.2 Turbo . Have you tried this car ? I am less than impressed with the tech in my new 992 C4S. But, for a comparable price, a clean 2019 Turbo (not Turbo S)
gives you so much more in performance. My great regret is that I can not go back and buy the 991.2 Turbo rather than my 992.

My friend does not care much about tech , as long as there is apple CarPlay which both generations have .The 991 turbo is very fast and effective but just prefers the rwd feel

Have your friend go try both, he will see the difference.

Myself, I was literally stunned at how much more advanced the 2021 992S was over my 2014 991S. It's a completely different car that only looks similar to a 991.

I traded in my 2019 991.2 GTS for a 2021 992 C2S, and definitely in the camp of your buddy getting a 992.

As already mentioned, the interior update alone was worth it me. That said, the 991 interior was awesome as well.

the 991 interior is so dated and bare unless you spend 20k upgrading it with all the toys and leather and alu bits. the base 992 stripper is quite nice on the other hand.

If it’s a custom build 992, go with that. Get exactly what you want. Otherwise, I think the 991.2 c2s is good choice especially if that includes CPO. Just make sure you like the interior and colour. I got a 992, but if I could have found a 991.2 in the exact build I wanted I would have gone for that and saved the money.

The reviews are generally in agreement that the 992, when compared to a 991, steers better, handles better, brakes better and has a much more responsive engine. If you have the option to get those enhancements, why go with and older design and lesser technology?
