On the road I’d agree. But on the track not so much, still huge fun though and seriously capable for a road car straight out of the box.

Yes for sure, 3rd on the road - not track (even though I have not tracked my 992). 3rd on the road has great range and if cruising around back roads, city, etc.

All of which supports the view that C2/C4 and S versions of the same are ideal for road use whereas a GT3 with PDK is what you want for the track. Not that C2/4/S etc. isn't fun on the track either.

So I have a manual 992 on order. I am just wondering what do you guys think is the rate of manual vs pdk for 992? And do you think the manual will be offered past 992.2? Reason I ask is I want to keep a manual car for as long as possible, (want my son to learn how to drive one....and he's only 5 lol) and just wondering if this might be the last 911 generation with a manual?

My crystal ball thinks it won't be long before they (like the other makers of manual in the super sport car market) drop Manual altogether. I think it will come down to numbers ordered before they drop it as well as hp/torque, and electrification (hybrid or full). I think we have a couple generations left before it is gone (or gone from normal production - maybe a few special releases), maybe the end of the next new generation. But really it will come down to numbers.

The manual, without doubt, is the definitive transmission for the Porsche line of sports cars. I would have loved to have gotten that spec if not for my progressing
arthritis and pain in my left hip. They can jaw all they want about the precision of PDK, but I think that, perhaps, they just don't know how to use a manual transmission
and, are a bit intimidated by the prospect of shifting everyday. There are hands on classes everywhere to instruct in the skill of using this standard transmission. Too bad
prospective Porsche buyers don't try this first before making their decision.
There is just a next level connection to your car with a manual.

Porsche has said that they are committed to offering a manual now and in the future, thank G-d !

As long as enough people buy manuals, Porsche will continue to make them. Trying to do my part to keep them alive. I have owned 7 911s in manual, including 4 991s and 1 992. If/when Porsche goes hybrid or (gasp) electric in the 911, the manual is gone. Better buy one now and put it in a time capsule for when your son turns 17. Imagine what a brand new, no miles 2021 911 Carrera S manual will be worth in 15 years (?).

Who knows, the Porsche product planners probably don't really either. The wanted the last GT3 to be PDK only but the market said no.

So did ferrari about 5 years later, the last F430 manuals are now coveted.

In my F12 or my 720s, I would not want a Manual. There is no way to not have PDK or equivalent with that much HP and not kill yourself with manual. There will be a day, hopefully a long way out, but the manual will not be offered (due to demand or practicality).

Porsche has a track record of filling a demand when a void exists like with the 911R and subsequent manual GT3 touring so I would think they will keep offering manuals on their quintessential sports car, the 911.

I think it’s awesome that you want to teach your son how to drive manual. I had the same thing in mind when I bought my current manual M3 6 years ago. My son was 10 at the time and now he’s 16! I vowed that he would be one of the few... perhaps the only one in his high school who knows how to drive a stick... alas he is a child of the internet age and, though he’s now 16, does not seem to be in any rush to get a drivers license.

Regardless, I plan on keeping my 6MT M3 for the foreseeable future... my only dilemma now, as I plot my jump to my first Porsche, is whether I get a manual C2S or a PDK.
