Default High amp battery charger

Hello
I'm getting a PIWIS 3 and the consensus is that a high amp battery charger (not trickle charger) is required as the modules are being coded.
Any suggestions in that sense?

I got a PIWIS 3 recently for my 991.2 and I would suggest getting one of IOTA Engineering DLS chargers to keep your battery fully charged.. I got the DLS-55 (55 amp) but would recommend getting the 90 amp charger.

With all the systems in our car it takes a lot to keep the battery going with everything turned on. With the 55 amp charger, I have to turn off the headlights, AC, and radio to keep the battery charged when I am coding..

A coment I found on amazon about the IOTA 90 amp:
"That said, I'd totally recommend this product for basic power supply. We use it anytime we are doing vehicle diagnosis that requires ignition on. I would NOT recommend using it for programming. The voltage output is adjustable via a jumper plug from 13.8 to 14.2V, but the higher the draw, the lower the voltage drops. Not sure what amperage they rated the 14.2V at, but on the 14.2V setting at 45amp draw, we are seeing below 14V of output. This is not sufficient for programming. Perfectly fine for all other applications."

It does not come with leads so you have to buy those separately. Also not sure what kind of battery’s you have but you should buy the module for your battery type to use this as a real charger and it is programmed to set the voltage above 14+ when changing. Yes, I saw the comments on Amazon about the voltage drop on the 90 amp. I have the 50 amp and I can get by with the proper voltage 14+. You have to buy the proper wire gauge size to minimize voltage drop and you will be fine. I have programmed a new module with my PIWIS and did not see any issues. Just my two cents.

I’ve been too busy with work to do anything lately. Maybe I will have time during the holidays.

I may be getting this one. The drain matches the fuse for my garage. 100A drains too much, I would need some work done in the jumper box.

I hope so. I'm still quite clueless on the coding procedures. Not a lot of info on PIWIS.

Why wouldn't this one work? The Porsche Service manual specifically says to use a 40A charger when using Piwis

I think those units are not meant for putting out high amps over an extended period of time. I could be wrong - check with the vendor/manufacturer. Simple PIWIS coding can take 20+ minutes, and work can easily take an hour. You need something that will crank out the high amps over that time period, not just for jump start.

When reading the specs via other sites, this wording is what makes me feel that this is not meant for cranking 40+ amps over a long period of time:
"From Schumacher’s Wheel Charger line, this unit offers 200A Engine Start, 40A Boost and 6/2A Charge/Maintain rates."

I posted this on the PIWIS thread, any info appreciated:


I just received my Powermax PM3 55 Amp power supply-I've been reading about it, and the question now is what voltage to set it to-I set the fixed voltage to 13.5 for now, but I've read about 13.8 and 14.5 volts and my thinking is perhaps 13.5 is probably a good setting. My GT3 is usually on the Ctek 7002 maintainer, and fully charged- the car is not a daily driver.

The Porsche Service Manual for 997 specifically says to use a source 40A and above, but mentions that voltage should not drop below 12.5 volts. I didn't see a specified voltage to set to, just as long as it doesn't go below 12.5.
The recommended current for 991s, 992s, Panamera, Cayenne, Macan seems to be closer to 75 or 100 Amps.
And there's a lot more discussion in the BMW groups, and the figures are either 13.5, 13.8 or 14.5 volts as far as I can recall.

But if I'm not doing a major thing like replacing a PCM or upgrading Navigation maps (that takes about 4 hours) I might leave the Powermax set to 3 stage charging then. One thing I thought of coding should be simple-most 911 passenger windows only go up or down automatically from the half way point(probably to protect children) and it can be coded to work like the driver's side. It shouldn't take long at all.
I have the large Bosch full size battery, AGM, about 900 CCA
So I think I'll set the fixed voltage at 13.5, after which the Ctek 7002 will be reconnected to maintain. But the thought that comes to mind is that I think I've read that AGM batteries usually are set to charge above 14V(?)
