Default Dealer wants to swap out my shifter due to "P" light intermittently not working

Ok... I know others have had this issue and some say it was fixed with a software update... well we did a software update and it still occurs..

When I put the car in Park ...the car actually goes into park, and the indicator on the dashboard shows "P" but the light on the shifter doesn't always show a red LED.... sometimes it does, but many times it doesn't.

I also occasionally get an error on the multi-displace part of the instrument panel that says "P may not be available" ...

So they want to fix it by replacing the entire PDK shifter module...

make sense to anyone? I hate to have them tear apart my center console for nothing.

Have you tried popping the top and empty the beard stubble out of it? Sorry, had to get that in.

I think it is wise - seems like just a dodgy shifter - internal switching on it. But yeah, I hate to have anyone mess with my car - even dealerships. Good luck with it.

If it makes you feel any better, I had a similar issue on brand new BMW X5M. They needed to replace the shifter and I was terrified the dealer would make a mess of the carbon fiber around the shifter, etc. I took all kinds of pictures beforehand to show there were no scratches, etc.

They replaced it and I can't even tell. Well, it does work now. Make sure you have a good dealer!

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Only thing maybe is to ask for the old shifter console. Would make for a nice mantle piece, or even a paper weight.

Process will hardly be a “tear apart” job. Pop the trim surrounds & the shifter console is held down by screws. Disconnect the wires & connect the new shifter.

ok, so we move forward with the job and get a keep sake out of it... sounds good to me.

I guess I'm surprised that there isn't more chatter about this, since I recall a thread a while back on it but then oddly, my car wasn't doing it back then.. it developed over time... which may mean it is a hardware issue after all.

The dealer may not give you the defective part...might need to send it back to the Porsche Mothership.

Yep it’s not hard to remove, messy but not difficult...the shift assembly is just an oversized toggle switch mounted to tunnel.

Without the trim surrounds all the fixings and plugs are exposed.

I have the same problem. M light occasionally works. I’ll take it in when I swap my summers for my winters

Same issue along with my PCM issues. When they pulled fuses and completely reset the car, it started working again... along with my PCM.

My wind deflector button continues to get stuck and waiting for that part from Germany.

What is a wind deflector...and where is the button? Is this for a sunroof? Or something specific to a Cabriolet?

That’s the infamous “P” flashing indicator, as in the car is calling you a ***** for not getting a manual.

I thought I saw that. The "M" light on my shifter seemed not to light up. I ignored it, and next day I noticed it was back to working. So I'm going to note if it seems to happen again. It's a new car, so I'm still getting used to it kinda thing.

I've noticed that the Shift Lever in the ones with a Manual Transmission are numbered. I guess that's to keep the folks who use them from getting confused about what order of gearing to choose next. Also, since there are now more than five forward gears; I can only imagine what it must be like, and the fear that it might generate, if they were to run out of fingers on their shifting hand if there weren't big numbers on the Shift Lever.

Ex: See Below

It can be more efficient to replace an entire assembly than to diagnose the fault, access it, fix it, and put the component back together. More efficient does not necessarily mean cheaper. In some cases, disassembly is not even an option. For example, I got an irreparable scratch/crack in the lens cover of a 981 headlight. I thought I could get a new lens cover. Nope. I was told that the headlight is all one sealed unit. I think the quote for a new headlight was about $2,500.00. Same thing goes with some PDK trans faults.
