Did something go thru your tire? That looks like an exit wound.

Yes. No clue what. Went straight through my tire and out the wheel... dealer says something is clunking inside so will be curious what they find. Terrible day but trying to make light of it. This is going to end up being a $3k bump in the road. Really regretting not checking the box for the wheel and tire protection.

That’s a lot more than a scratch!

I can’t imagine anything that would have made a hole like that in the wheel, after going through the tire, short of a bullet.

was your wheel turned when it happened? Looks like a front wheel?

I've never seen that before. Bizarre. Driving over something big enough to puncture through the wheel doesn't seem possible.

"Murphy" always seems to make it such that IF you get the protection, you never (or almost never) use it BUT if you DON'T get it; then you wish you had. That is something I have never, ever seen as well. I will be interested in hearing more about what they find.

Thanks for sharing but sorry that it happened.

That’s no scratch. Really does look like you ran over some rebar or other metal debris at speed.

Interesting. Bet it’s a bullet that caused it. Either rubber chunk or part of slug inside tire. Driving near any riots, sorry, protests?

Have a VW GTI as a daily driver (great car BTW) - within the first 1K miles a rear tire picked up a ~7" piece of rebar, flung it up in the wheel well where it went through the inner plastic fender liner and caught on a bumper support. Since it could not exit, and as the tire rotated around it went right through the tire and wheel - loud bang and crunch, instant flat. Was near a siding in the road, pulled over, went back and still have the piece of rebar today.

BTW - you can also check with your insurance company and file a "comp" claim - probably would help with most of the cost.

You would not believe the stuff that can happen, one of my fave youtube channels -

That's what I was thinking as well. Would be interesting to see if there is any damage to the rotor or other brake parts. This would tell you the position of the tire when it was punctured.
