Interesting responses! I know it's Rennlist and a 911 forum but I'm a little surprised by the responses!

I think it's interesting how many people talk about cars in the "this is how they perform 10/10 on a track" sort of way as the norm. Maybe people bought 992s to track, I'd personally take a NA six for that (obviously I'd take a 911 or Cayman over a Taycan for the track.) But my post was speaking to a daily driver and back road car.

I do understand that many car owners get a little protective and will fight to the death at the idea that their car isn't the best at everything (and the 911 is the best at a lot) but given how I frame my post I had hoped we could all be friendly Porsche owners and compare in the context of a daily driver.

I do think people that compare the Taycan to a Tesla or think it's ugly are not being rational, but oh well. Change & innovation is not for everyone.

As for my time in 911s, as someone was curious, during my decision process I rented a 991.2 4S for a week and I ended up cancelling my order after driving my friend's new 992 4S for a trip to the California coast. So I've driven those two cars, my Taycan 4S, and a Macan Turbo on the same drives including 8.5/10ish backroad driving. The 992 4S was the clear winner on the backroads, as I mentioned, but I'd take the Taycan over the 991.2 (the steering and sound on the 991.2 I rented just wasn't quite there for me but maybe it was the specific car?) and the Taycan was the clear winner for the rest of the drive. On a track or if you're going really crazy (/dangerous) on backroads I'm sure the 992 would pull ahead even more and the 991.2 would pull ahead as well.

I love the 911 and hope to one day get either a NA version or maybe a Cayman GT4 as a car to play with. I know the Taycan won't be for everyone, right now it's probably not for most with the charging infrastructure, but if you guys get the chance to drive a well speccd (RWS, chrono, summer tires) Taycan hard on a backroad give it a shot. I guarantee you'll be surprised.

Well, I hope my response did not come off as antagonistic.

I love both the 992 911 and the Taycan.

But I just feel they are very different machines.

Great complements to one another, but necessarily as substitutes, and certainly not relevant as comparables.

But I did enjoy your review of the Taycan, and am glad you are enjoying the new ride. I know I really like the Taycan during my time with it.

Just curious why you don't think a Taycan/Tesla comparison is rational?

Or that people who think it's ugly are irrational just because they don't agree with you. It's subjective, remember?

One major component that will forever connect a Porsche Taycan & Tesla model S.

Soulless driving experience

Taste is absolutely subjective, but anyone who has seen a Taycan in person and says it's ugly has some wacky taste IMO. The car is drop dead gorgeous in the right spec.

There is a video on YT of a comparison of the Taycan Turbo S and the 992 Turbo S. Both great cars, but the Taycan makes the 992 Turbo look positively antique.

My only complaint about the Taycan is that, like everything Porsche, it's overpriced. If it were 20-25% cheaper, I'd have one in my garage as a DD instead of my M5.

Thanks for sharing OP. I love all cars so find the comparison interesting I do think people are being overly critical. Depending on your use case, they can be substitutes (or not at all). And either way, comparing cars is fun.

Aesthetically, they are both amazing looking cars. I think right now the Taycan has much more road presence, but who knows in a couple years.

I do think comparing against the Model S is completely fair. Just maybe not for you based on what you're looking for

I do think you did a great job in your overview and many times mentioned how the cars are different in particular to the weight difference issues. Don't let the negativity bother you, it is Rennlist so enough said. In the end we are all boys with toys and think ours is the best.
Sounds like a great car (no surprise as I have faith in Porsche engineering) and it's working for you. Congratulations.

You need to get yourself a 718GTS 4.0/GT4/Spyder as a second car while they still make them!

I agree with what others have said on this thread. I really don’t see these two vehicles being frequently crossed shopped. Either you’re in the market for a sports car or you’re considering entering the world of EVs. Of course, there is the scenario where a Porsche owner wants to expand his/her fleet with a second car. With that said, nice job on the comparison points. However, for me - I am simply not ready to enter the EV world. I am too in love with the sound and soul of the ICE (especially a flat-6 in a 911), and frankly, range anxiety and the lack of a charging station infrastructure here on the east coast holds me back. Enjoy your Taycan, I will agree that they are beautiful cars when properly spec’d. I have a 911 and did look at the Taycan last year but ultimately decided to add a 2021 Cayenne Turbo Coupe, given the additional added practically.

I did cross shop as I was feeling the EV pull and have been for a bit. I crossed shopped from all the reviews that stated how well the Taycan handled for an EV. I went in 90% sure I was leaving with a Taycan. I ended up with the 992 as my daily and will hold off on EV for a bit. My impression of the Taycan was mediocre at best. I agree that you have to have the right color and build for it to make the cut. Atheistically the 4S that I drove was just ok. I just can't get past the mustache. The other surprising part was that I found, for me, the cockpit was a bit more cramped than that 992 and that because of the four doors getting in was similar to my RS3 thanks to the B pillar. I wasn't blown away by the tech I still think that from a UI Tesla has it hands down though their build can be suspect sometimes. It was straight line fast, rode really smooth but you could tell it was a "heavy" car.

What swayed me the most was really in fairness an apples to oranges comparison. I wanted a fun sports car again and the Taycan just wasn't that. There will be an EV in my garage before it is said and done. Now just wasn't the time. I would really like the Taycan in a coupe I think.
