To Sunroof or Not To Sunroof, That Is The Question
#46
I wasn't going to order a sunroof either but the C2S I test drove had a glass sunroof and I absolutely loved all the additional light that it let into the cabin and how airy it made everything feel while driving. So I added it to my build.

Three Wheelin'
I bucked the trend and and got the best compromise IMHO.... all metal, body color sunroof ... and it was $1500.. not $2000

I don't even know how many cars I've had over the last 30 or so years, but almost all of them have had sunroofs and none of them have ever leaked. I currently have a Ford Raptor with a huge panoramic sunroof that opens and I parked it outside all winter long in Alaska and it has never once leaked. My only issue with vehicles leaking have been 911 cabriolets that drip water inside when I go through the touchless carwash.
My only issue with the sunroof on my 992 is that I always seem to hit the button the wrong way to open it. It feels to me like you should pull back on the button to open the roof, but instead it works like a window where you push down on it to roll it down and pull back on it to close it again.

For me sunroof is great feature for regular series of 911, such as Carrera/Carrera S. But it’s not a must have options. And of course glass sunroof is much better then steel one

My 991 was a 991.1 GTS coupe. It had lighter forged center-lock wheels, but not the significantly lighter carbon ceramic brakes. I believe that if you really need the lightest non-GT 992 for track-day lap times, wait for the 992 GTS, and get it with forged CL wheels, PCCBs, 4-way sport seats-plus, light weight glass, and a carbon fiber roof. Of course, many GT3 guys change out the PCCBs because of the extreme expense. So those guys are willing to add un-sprung weight in order to offset expenses. I just hope each of us gets what we want when ordering/buying one of these wonderful cars.
My '15 GTS did have a glass roof, which I enjoyed. But, having said that, there are many good reasons to not have either sunroof option. I never had any problems with mine, but several people on the 991 forum had issues. I keep thinking that when I order my 992 it will be a long-term keeper, and possibly my last 911 (am really old cantankerous curmudgeon!), which should make me wary or some of the more complex options. Ha! I just can't help myself. So, I plan on rear wheel steering. And maybe even some of the "old guy" options, like the ones that flash at you if another car is passing, or even the obnoxious lane-keeping thing that I really resent in my Golf R. By the way, there was no sunroof available on any Golf R! That's now my track car (much cheaper to insure for track days) with light wheels and fairly inexpensive Bridgestone R71R tires. And I almost forgot about the new Porsche "InnoDrive" which will supposedly safely stop the car for you if you nod off. Smack-dab in the middle of the lane you were driving in when you were last awake.
This time I'm not going to wait for the GTS: I had the iron brakes on the '15, which were nothing short of incredible. But those darn CL wheels were a bitch to get off/on every time I needed to change brake pads. 600 ft lb of tq. Even with the correct tools it was a lot of work. The 992S has plenty of hp/tq for me, especially if I go with the Cobb AP again. I swapped the Porsche AP software from my '15 NA GTS to the VW AP. The R had 292hp/280tq stock. With Off-The-Shelf Stage 1+ 93 Octane the maximums are alleged to be 380hp/381tq, out of a 2.0L single turbo 4cyl engine. I cannot verify this, but I do know that little VW has become kind of crazy fast.
It sounds like you have thought carefully and ordered a fantastic car. I love the idea of the carbon roof and the 4-way Sport+ seats. I completely agree with you on the iron brakes and much lighter after-market wheels. Lighter wheels make a huge difference in both feel and handling with a significant reduction in un-sprung weight. Hope you'll show us your car when you get it!

Burning Brakes
@kwikit356 Being an old guy myself, I did go with the LCA, but hate the LKA in my other car. It stays off. My son-in-law tunes these cars so after break in, it should have plenty of power. Even stock it’s no slouch. Happy to post up pics when it shows up. Right now scheduled to arrive on 9/11.... Yeah, I know, 9/11. Has both a good and bad connotation.

I never use my sunroof but I wanted the glass sunroof purely for aesthetic reasons. I think a tinted back windshield carrying over to the black glass sunroof looks really nice.

+1 on the aesthetic reasons. Most comments here are about functionality, which certainly makes sense. But I approach it purely for the way it looks. Depending on the body color, the glass sunroof creates a completely different visual appeal. IMO, RY, Silvers and CW look better with glass sunroof.

Actually thought I was all set to go without a sunroof (personally think it looks better plus save some money) and then we pulled the top off our Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for the first time in 2 years. Really enjoying driving around with no top. While a sunroof would give only a fraction of the opening of the Jeep without a top it is now back under serious consideration (metal version only). As a side note, working from home due to the Pandemic plus having the empty space in the garage where the sports car would normally be is allowing us to leave the Jeep topless which is kind of fun (there are some positives due to the changes to daily life brought on by the Pandemic - spending more time with the family and the dog, reconnecting with old friends, getting things done you never had time to - such as putting together Top Lift Pro to remove Jeep hard top). Sometimes you just have to look for the small silver linings in a bad situation!
